Here's a weird one

Featured Replies

For the second week in a row I have had a bass take the belly treble and split ring off of my spy bait. The eye on the lure is fine and fully closed. I assume that perhaps the bass are able to torque the lure during the fight and open the split ring enough to get it sliding off the lure's eye.

Anyone have this happen to them? I have never had it happen before 2 weeks ago and now it has happened in back to back trips.

Never had it happen, West Coast buddy, but since smallmouth fight like hula girls on crack, I'm not surprised.

How to protect your keyboard from the random weirdness of the net.

@ol'crickety just stole @pdxfisher's thread from him. 😆

I was not drinking my coffee when I read that hula girl line, but I definitely would've had it coming out my nose if I hadn't just put the cup down.

That bass stealing your treble is wild. I also have never had that happen. If it were me, I'd upgrade split rings or get a different lure.

I had a rather spirited SMB rip the entire hardware package out of the rear of a SK Sexy Dawg.

Split the plastic at the back of the bait so the clip, split ring and EWG treble all went the way of the deep 6.

Wasn't using very heavy gear either.

Call the Authorities.  It sounds like an international conspiracy to me.  Fish stealing hooks off of SPY baits could lead to a national security threat, or at least a big congressional scandal.

I have had the the eye ripped out of a few lures (spy bait a few times and a spook once) in the past but the split ring being removed was just bizarre. Maybe there is one really smart smallmouth who has figured out how to use a pair of split ring pliers :)

not sure how it would effect things but can you use an ovel split ring instead of the circle?

Either way very weird and no, never had that happen once lol. Bent hooks, ripped out hardware sure but not that.

Yet another reason for a renewal of the Pike Committee...

I once got a bite and reeled in nothing but a split ring.  Brand new rattle trap just gone

I have had smallies pull a rear treble out of the split ring several times mangling the split ring in the process. One time the whole hook & split ring were gone. This happened on jerk baits. The split rings & hooks on most SPY baits are rather small.

These threads about fish pulling out split rings and stuff are unlocking previously unknown fears

Thanks, I hate it 😂

How does a hula girl on crack fight? What’s her signature move?

Thinking a similar moveset to Peach in Smash Bros Brawl

I'm in Dwight's camp on this one. Using braid or braid to mono or fluoro leader?  Do you think you might be overpowering the terminal tackle on your lure/s and just straightening the hooks and or split rings out? Use the drag Luke!

Fair comment but I fish a pretty soft rod and I don't fish a tight drag.  I think @Dwight Hottle experienced what i did.  Just a mangling of the split ring.  Just really weird to have it happen 2 weks in a row.

I think you are right and that it is just an old fashioned mangling. The split rings are small on the spy baits so maybe they are extra vulnerable to being being damaged. Just happy to see someone else in the same boat (or maybe I should say the same kayak).
