What line should I be using for my UL setup?

Featured Replies

Hi all, just recently got my first UL rod/reel and was wondering what line type/lb test you guys would recommend. I went with a Temple Fork Outfitters 6'6" Trout Panfish II rod with a Shimano Stradic FM 1000 reel.

I use 4# Trilene XL for all my UL and panfish rods.

I'm braid-leader on all my spinning rigs. My UL rig is 8# Sufix 832 to 4# Sufix Siege...8'-12' leader.

I have been using Gamma Panfish and really like it. I have used both the 4# and the 2#. The hi-vis yellow is nice because I can see it better!

I really like PLine flouroclear on spinning rods.  Low memory and strong.  4x to 8x for me on UL.

I know a lot of people suggest a light braid to help eliminate line twist.  60 years ago I used nothing but 4# XL.  Right now I have 5# Fins Windtamer on my Light spinning rod.  Don't like it.  That small diameter has zero abrasion resistance.  I grew up with XL.  Will be going back to 4# mono or co-polymer.  Not that XL is bad, but just want to try something different.

Why would you use a leader on 4 # mono, and if using one, why so long?  TIA

Braid doesn't eliminate line twist, it just doesn't react as poorly as mono and FC when it gets twisted.

I’m using Kast King 4 pound monofilament on 2 reels, I like that there’s a few different color options, although the blue faded quite quickly the red is holding up extremely well.

The 4# Siege IS the leader - and that long to let it get down far enough cause 832 floats.

In my teenage years I used a 10# leader with my 4# XL line on one rod.  Why?  It is (still have the rod) a 9' fiberglass rod designed for fishing nightwalkers.  I also used it on occasion for small Roostertails and BeetleSpins.  The leader was used to eliminate snapping the lures off on the cast with those lures.

On my trout setup I always use 4# Stren Original in the purple package.   I throw inline spinners exclusively so line twist can’t be avoided so every 3-4 trips, strip and reline. I’ve caught thousands of trout over the years and some big ones up to 25” in the mix. It’s never failed me, available everywhere and cheap. Not that cheap is my thing if you look at the other lines I run (invisx, assassin) but it’s nice to find a break anywhere you can.

6 lb supernatural mono. After using supernatural in 14/16# for my casting rigs I put some on my trout rod this spring. Great line for it. I like 6 lb if I am using split shots for just a little more pinch protection. If it’s weightless single hooks then 4#.

Use whatever you like.

I switched to 10# braid with a 4# fluoro leader.  I tried straight fluoro but grew tired of the wind knots after a few outings.  It would have worked fine if I was willing to switch out my line more often, but I'm too lazy and cheap for that.  I don't know why I got away from using straight 4# mono.  It worked fine, as I remember.  But the braid lasts virtual forever and casts really well on a spinning reel, so that's been my go-to.

I use 10lb braid to a 6lb hybrid leader. Never know when something bigger than expected is going to bite.

4 lb supernatural for the upper end of UL and if I know I'm going to get into bass. 2 lb daiwa samurai fc for the really light stuff.

I don’t consider a Stradic 1000 a UL reel, size 750 or 500. Fits this purpose.

Line diameter .0040/ .0070 like Sunline Super Natural 4 lb. is .006 D
