Just discovered two swollen Red Eye Shad in my tackle box. I know for a fact that these weren’t swollen the last time I went fishing. Which means this happened the past Monday. I left my crankbait box out on the deck for a while, switching colors while trying to figure out what the bass wanted. I shot an email off to SK to see if they’ll make good on them. Does anyone know of them replacing any of the swollen RES? A quick internet search shows this isn’t a new thing. I’ve come to like RES over Rattle Traps and Super Spots, but I don’t fish only on cloudy days. If this is a common occurrence, I’ll be steering clear of them. 

The one on the left is as it should be. The red one shows a little swelling. The blue one is just a full-blown fattie! All three were in the same compartment of the tackle tray. The red one was on top, the white on the bottom.

Can't leave baits on the deck in the summer.  Happens to all hard baits.  Not fun!

Yes, Strike King will usually replace them.

In over 40 years of fishing, I’ve never had it happen before. Granted, I just bought this G3 Gator Tuff last year. All aluminum, no carpet. And it gets HOT. 

 

Anyone ever tried painting the top of tackle trays white to help reduce the heat absorption?

I've never noticed it before - just read about it here - but it's probably happened to me before - I just think in general - for me - the rocks and branches get them long before the sun does!  😂😂😂👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 

 

I agree that maybe you could see if Strike King will send you a new one.

The only bait I've had that happen with (that I can remember at least) is a 6th Sense Crush50. I emailed them with pics and they sent me a new one.

I emailed them and they asked for more info. I am hoping they'll send me replacements. I shall endeavor to keep them out of direct sunlight in the future.

The answer is very simple.  The skinny one on the left is a male, the other two are females.  You left them in the same tray and nature took over.  Keep them in separate trays and you wont have a problem.

I’ve had them do that in my truck when I forgot my hard bait box over a weekend camping. Blew up 1/2 of them. 

This thread is just a reminder that I am not wrong for fishing hard baits almost exclusively during the cold months in North Carolina 🤣🤣🤣👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Update: I received an email today from Lew's/Strike King, which included a gift card code to replace the swollen Red Eye Shad. Makes me more determined to support Strike King in the future. 😁

I was today years old, when I first heard of this issue

Got me thinking, my boxes are always in truck or boat in garage , so both places get hot, but not sun. Just went out to check them 25-30 RES in lipless mix and them and other various brands all looked good . Is it from sun?

I have had it happen to certain baits but not an ABS bait.

Same here it must be from the sun. My boxes stay in a hot garage and have had no issues 

There was a post here within the past couple of years where someone lost a whole Plano type box full of RES like this. His were stored in the compartment in the side of his boat, if I remember correctly, so they weren't exposed directly to the sun, but were basically sitting in an oven.

 

Bugs me I can't find that old post.

It might be a floating RES.  

I’d say it was due to sun, though I’ve left that same tackle tray out before. Perhaps it was just in more direct sun than other times.
