Fish smell on hands

Featured Replies

Well, I shouldn't even admit this.

Ban me if you have to.

Make fun of me if you need to.

But, I hate the fish smell on my hands after a good day of fishing. It's weird, I even grew up on a farm.

You get home and you wash and wash and they still stink.

I'm also trying to get my wife interested in fishing but she REALLY doesn't want that smell on her hands. She's a true city slicker.

I've tried toothpaste which just masks the smell a bit. The other night I tried vinegar as well which didn't do much.

Any "secrets" out there?

I'm right with you, I don't like the smell on my hands.  The best solution, wet your hands before touching any fish.  It's not 100% perfect but it is 95% IMO.  After that, a regular wash with dawn works for me.

I don't mind the smell.  I actually rub some Megastrike on my hands at the start of the day to mask my human smell when handling my bait.

Here's a new one that happened to me last week.  My bass thumb wasn't recognized by my phone for a couple days so I had to enter all my passwords manually.  That's a good problem to have.

Pure lemon juice. It will also let you know if you have any cuts in your skin, it does work!

Tooth paste works.

We talking fish smell like from bass?

Usually a good soap and water hand washing takes care of that.

If you have pike slime on your hands, that odor is going to be there for days.  It reaks.

I also don’t care for the smell and I hate when I transfer it to my steering wheel.

There is something I call a magic peanut. A small piece of metal kind of in the shape of a peanut. You rub your hand on it (with water and sometimes dish soap like dawn but sometimes it’s seems to work better without the soap to remove the smell) and it takes most if not all the smell.

you can find it in those kitchen stores and it was meant to remove the smell of garlic from your hands and it seems to work for reasons I don’t know.

I rinse my hands over the side immediately after release to get the initial slime off.
When off the water I use a hand sanitizer before I touch anything.
(never while fishing)

If they still smell, soap and water or maybe a little Dawn dish soap when I get home will do it

I have good luck using "Wet Ones" wipes. The come in a large plastic tube and are larger than most other wipes. The do a good job of getting rid of the smell.

I didn't used to like it, but now I do. Rinsing your hands in the lake after each catch helps a lot. I just use dawn when I get home. Well, not real dawn since they turned traitor to their roots and changed their scent. I don't want to smell like flowers or hawaii or whatever for the rest of the day... so I switched to walmart brand and I'm happy enough.

I thought I was going to be the only one to recommend this.

I was gonna say rubbing alcohol does it too. Even get the same burn from the cuts!

I tried ketchup last night.

Helped some.

Took the wife with me as well. She won't even take weeds off her lure. Told you she's a city slicker.

Nothing is finer then getting home from a good bass fishing trip and waving your fingers under her nose and saying " Wanna smell my Bass".

My sister in law bought me one of these for Christmas. I'd if its the exact one but its got like a sugar grit or something in it and strong lemon smell. Works the best out of everything I've tried.

@Darth-Baiter  I couldn’t believe it worked either and it was a pleasant surprise. Good point! It never dawned on me that the shape of the stainless steel should matter. But having it in a shape roughly that of a bar of soap does make it easier to use. 😇😎
