Cheap/budget hooks?

Featured Replies

Is there any good priced hooks that are actually good? I see people talk about Eagle Claw hooks and say they are bad. Is there another brand that is priced close to Eagle Claw hooks but are good? I am looking at EWG hooks and straight round hooks 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 and 5/0.

BPS but hooks are a "You get what you pay for" kind of thing.  I would look for sales and then find the one that works for you.

Personally,  I like the Ryugi Infini.  I was ordering them from Japan for around $2.50 a pack. The exchange rate made it a no brainer but with the tariffs in place,  there's no way I am ordering just hooks. Another to look at is BKK. They run $6 a pack at regular price but they can be readily found on sale. To me, they run a little smaller in size but are great hooks.

They also sell combo size packs of their hooks for a decent discount, you can get a box with 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, 5/0 all in one pack for $20 and I think Amazon might have a 15% discount right now.

BKK Fangs - across the board treble swap for me.

They tend to be under-rated - their hook gap is bigger than the rating.

Several online tackle stores import BKK

I'm also using BKK single senko hooks.

That's a good deal.  I just ordered some of the Titan Divers for swimbaits and saw the discount but missed the variety box. I might order some but I have a ton of hooks right now.  I ordered about 20 packs of various EWGs and worm hooks from Japan just before the tariffs set in.

Check out a hook from them called the Nemesis. Its crazy sharp and strong.  Works great with heavier/thicker soft plastics.

I've gotta a few quality hooks off of aliexpress. Wasn't expecting much, but i've been using them for a few years now, cought muskies, sturgeons, etc, and they're great. But because of the tariffs, i assume they're not worth getting if you're in the US.

I wouldn’t skimp out on hooks, for that matter, line either. I’ve purchased Gamakatsu on Amazon for cheap at times 5/0 straight shank. Otherwise I’m using Owner’s. My custom made jigs use Mustad Ultra point and they’re sharp and hold the point longer than gammys do. My otc jigs are Denny Brauer structure jigs w Owners.
I have some DD cranks with a triple grip copy by BKK and they’re sticky sharp. Jerk baits run Gamakatsu & Owner. For plastics in sizes you mentioned it’s a mix of Gamakatsu and Owner.
These brands are worth the coin. If you truly can’t swing the cost get the Eagleclaw and a file and sharpen them. They’re available at Walmart and most any bait shop in America.

Eagle claw has vastly improved in the last few years.

You might look at Captain Hooks warehouse.

Owner J bend off set hooks are on sale at Tackle Warehouse.

Going cheap on hooks can be very costly!

I try to not to “cheap out” on any gear. But never on hooks.

I find the Brent Chapman round bend from Walmart are very good. 15 hooks for about $5.  I used to use Academy or Basspro hooks but they're very soft and the points bend.  I use cheap treble hooks on my jigging spoons because when they're stuck in a brush pile the hooks bend to get the spoon back.

I find eagle claw hooks for trout and panfish and their laser ones are decent for bass.

I think they might have finally overcome that bad rep.

All of the other major brands like gamakatsu, owner, vac, are all excellent.

For value, the BPS hooks are very good. I would not hesitate to use these.

I use Ozark Trial worm hooks and they are pretty decent. They are way better than the bronze Eagle Claw hooks. They aren't as good as Gamakasu, but they are decent hooks.

In a pinch, I'll use Academy H2OX hooks. Not bad hooks.

Good Fishing

Been using them for years now, both the EWG (in 3/0 and 5/0) and the flipping hooks. They're like 6 bucks for a 25 pack and I've never had one bend out, break, or roll the point.

I use Eagle Claw hooks a lot and I catch a fish occasionally. You want the black nickel hooks, not the bronze ones.

@bulldog1935 halt off... I don't need them but was curious about some BKK and bumped into this

Amazon 15% off $7.49. Not a huge discount but I needed the 2/0s and they had them in stock. They work great for the Citizen Micro Swimbait. Crushed two big ones today on it. Got a 7lb catfish and a 6lb largemouth.

I have no idea why that's there haha

@FishTank i can understand why you feel compelled to stick with them.

To be honest, I had bought one pack to try out earlier this year. I fished them a few times and caught a couple of fish on some various swimbaits but nothing special. When I stuck that catfish yesterday right through the hard part of its upper lip, I was sold on them. Not sure if it will replace my favorite Owner Beast hooks though but the 2/0 is a perfect match for the Citizen Micro.

I can't swing those beats hooks man, just a little too rich for my blood. Especially since I found a manufacturer that might be the OEM selling for less than half price on AE (Spinpolar Raptor hooks). With these tariffs on citizens idk if I'll ever buy from AE again, but I'll need to see a crazy sale on the beasts to buy those. The AE hooks are strong and sharp, the beast hooks i bumped into for half off feel indiscerniblely different, and i never went back to them.

I don’t do AE. I learned my lesson watching my buddy fish some knock off hooks and baits. It was something to behold and quite entertaining. I decided to find a good deal on what's reliable.

My favorite place for hooks before tariffs hit was JLS. I ordered 20+ packs of various hooks before it all ended. My favorite cheaper replacements for Beast Hooks are the Hyper Tornados from Hayabusa. They are under $4 a pack but like the Beast Hooks, no size 2/0s. They are bone crushing sharp and slightly lighter than the Beast hooks. They also have a good slick coating.

I wish I prepared better and ordered a bunch of stuff, I wasn't aware how absolutely outrageous everything would become and how some things would just be not available anymore and how shipping companies would just start adding gouging fees...

I plan to explore some amazon hooks, I've come to learn that Beast, Gamakatsu, Eagle claw and Sxinxiping hooks are all relatively sharp enough compared to each other - which is not sharp enough for me. So if I have to sharpen a Gami myself, I might as well pay 1/3 the price to do it

Can’t walk away from Gama. One thing I can count on

Many of the basspro hooks are made by VMC...says it right on the pack.  So, if you have a basspro/cabelas nearby, it might be worth a look.
