Your Main Reason For Using Fluorocarbon Line?

Featured Replies

If you were to single out the one biggest reason why you fish fluorocarbon line or leader, what would it be?

There may be a bit more to it but for me, it's because it sinks.

Thus allowing presentations where that is beneficial

to run and/or stay a little deeper.

^ Yep - except topwaters (spooks, whopper-ploppers, etc) Then it's nylon-mono.

For braid-to-leader, to have some measure of shock tolerance (stretch), both for striking fish and for fish lunges - if both happen at the same instant, the impact through braid alone can break your rod.

Fishing salt, fluoro sink is even more important than fishing freshwater.

I stopped running straight fluorocarbon.

I do run braid-to-fluorocarbon on both spinning and casting rigs. I like the higher sensitivity and invisibility of fluoro.

Good point

EDIT: Meant to quote this

It's more abrasion resistant to rocks and teeth.

Until it gets damaged.  Then you have to replace it.

Less stretch for jigs and T rigs. Not a braid guy

I dont use it currently because it is more expensive than mono, can be damaged when tying a knot if its not lubricated or using the wrong knot, and gets deformed when you pull on a snag unlike mono that rebounds and doesnt lose strength.

Im considering putting 6 lb fluoro on one rod for finesse stuff in clear water because it sinks which would be better for light jigs and is more invisible than mono in water.

abrasion.  I have it on two casting rods for that purpose, otherwise I run mono for almost all casting rods.

On braid to leader, because it sinks and also abrasion resistance.

I use a fluorocarbon leader with my mainline braid for increased abrasion resistance. Honorable mention is ease of breaking off if I get snagged.

Invisibility.

To you or the fish?

The main reason : that would be precision.  I'm more precise when I'm pitching with fluoro then with braid.

But there are others.

There’s not just one reason for me, it’s the whole package…

Sensitivity (compared to mono)

Lower stretch (compared to mono)

Abrasion resistant (compared to mono)

Sinks and stays sunk (compared to mono)

Smaller diameter (compared to mono)

“invisibility” and more uv protection (compared to mono) doesn’t matter to me

I use it for the abrasion resistance and shock absorption.  I fish what amounts to underwater jungles much of the time; lots of fallen trees, beaver dams, logjams, and root wads to contend with.

I use it because the first time I had a guest in my boat who was using fluorocarbon while I was using monofilament boated 7 fish before I got a bite and we were using the same bait.

Less visible, less stretch, sinks.

With that said, I hate using it.

Even top of the line floro gets super finicky at times.

Nothing better than throwing on brand new Tatsu and then having almost all of it wasted due to one bad cast.

Sensitivity, if I want to feel the bottom or the vibration of my lure.

The only reason I will occasionally use FC line is less coefficient of drag going though water ( less bow), heavier specific gravity then water (it sinks slowly).

The reason I don’t use FC line more often is poor knot strength than equal diameter monofilament line.

This.  Nothing comes close to fluoro semi-slack sensitivity for me.

Abrasion resistance

I like the fact it sinks. And it is more sensitive.

i used flouro leaders in salt water for 20 years. Yeah it requires more re tying and such.

but to me it is a hard sell on im one bad cast away from a trashed spool of line that’s is expensive lol.
