My other hobby is woodworking. I have a basement shop and spend time woodworking almost every day. I've made most of the furniture in our house, plus boxes, clocks, shadow boxes, a bit of everything. I find it very satisfying to take wood ( mostly from our own property) and create something. Here's a couple pics. ( I'm not the best picture taker)

Cool, I'll take you up on that when I get some free time, what time of day is best for you? I peeked at your profile and see you like bullet chess and dailies, unfortunately this 50 something year old brain is not great at quick calculations plus I've only been seriously studying less than 6 months so bullet is out, does 10 or 15min time controls work for you? Daily is ok too.

@Bass Rutten I am happy with anything. I am happy with any time as well, mid day, evening, night is better for me, since I'm not up early most days. I do well when I'm fresh in the morning though if I am up. I mostly play bullet when I'm waiting on the wife while she's shopping. I play daily with several friends. I haven't played in a few months... but I'm still sharp as a tack lol!

Metal detecting. Finding an old coin or relic is a lot like catching a big bass.

Bowling. Ive been an avid bowler for 50 years. This is the first year I havent bowled due to health.    They replaced me and my paltry  170 avg with someone carrying a 210. Maybe I'll be able to bowl again next year.

My wife and I took up photography about 10 years ago.  Recently we have taken up cooking.

I just realized that I've been lying my entire life.  When someone has asked me my favorite color I've always said "blue".  That's a lie.  My favorite color is "color case hardened".  Fantastic lever gun.

I also enjoy chess. Beyond that, working out and cooking are primary hobbies.

I also dabble in woodworking. I do it for a living, working for a company making school furniture. I enjoy making my own things.

Along with knife work, I do a bit of leatherwork too.

Combine knives and woodworking and you have whittling.

Don’t know that I have any obsessions, but I do have things I love to do, like being outside in nature, canoeing/fishing, hiking, camping, pretty much anything, even yard work. For the last 5 or so years I’ve been working on vegetable gardening. Just trying to learn how to get things to grow without succumbing to bugs and diseases, which for me is the usual. Being retired helps.

i do need to come up with something for winter other then reading.

Cutting firewood

Sometimes a man’s gotta chop some wood to clear his head.

Nowdays it’s mostly fishing, I just don’t have much time for anything else.. I haven’t hunted much lately, but planning a hog hunt in a couple weeks. I used to garden and play softball but that ship has sailed, but I may have a small garden again if I ever retire.

I play a 5 string banjo, so I do that 1-2 times a week at least…

I do some reading, 90% of it is the Bible, the other 10% is historical novels, especially civil war books and Louie Lamour westerns.

I agree, chopping wood is fun and therapeutic.

I’ve had a design in my head for a while for something that could hold EWG and Offset Shank hooks…. on a whole other OCD level so I put brain to design and bought a 3D printer.  It took ALOT of time to perfect the design but I did it. Along with that, I’ve been printing some fishing stuff like an FG Knot tying tool, a simple line spooler and small tackle boxes dedicated to different types of fishing I do. The idea with the boxes is to grab just that box and that’s my X stream or X lake box, everything I need for that place.

It’s been fun. I’ve been printing and even designing things to print that are useful around the house like a towel holder, TV leg stands, desk accessories, etc.

I swear, next week I’ll go to the gym! ;) ok, maybe the following week … or two.  Holidays crush my waist line!

Trading cards. I have every star card from the 60s to the 80s. Mantles, bradys, gretzkys my faves.

I enjoy cataloging cast bullets. I enjoy the history of each design, and how it's used in the field. I enjoy casting and using them as well.

@12poundbass...with or without for you?

I helped all three of them when I was done with mine and then explained the concept of using non ethanol gas in seasonal engines.

You're lucky to have non ethanol gas available. In Illinois, that isn't an option.  Stabil and drain the carb(s) at the end of the season.

To the OP; Reloading and bench rest shooting. It used to be shooting from the prone position, but age had an enormous influence on the switch.

I love racquetball but have no one to play with so I play solo and take advantage of the anarobic stints.

I also love chess. I am not rated but I did beat the kid who would late that year WA state champ for her age bracket . She was no chump. She was squeezing me the entire game like a little magnus Carlson and her first move advantage of playing white was real. Her board perception was insanely sharp. She made only one little boo boo that caused her to lose but let me tell you, I have never played someone that strong. She has had excellent training from legit GMs. I won’t play her now, however, because she’d kick my Fanny through the goal post like a field goal. I’m going to keep my perfect record, 😆.

I also like golf, building things out of creativity or necessity and playing musical instruments. I’m teaching myself bossa nova on the guitar (once again solo, lol). I play mainly keys but dabble with guitar, ukulele, and bass guitar.

  • Super User

I usually don’t dabble in things. If it’s a hobby of mine, I’m most likely pretty passionate about it. Besides bass fishing, I have a passion for gardening, camping, cooking, gaming, and the Atlanta Braves.

Trading cards

I had a Mickey Mantle card when I was a kid. Also had all the stars and others in baseball from the late 60s through the 70s. My son took them to school with out permission in the 5th grade . When I went to look at them the next time, most of the valuable cards were gone. He admitted it but said they were stolen out of his desk.

Now I have the remnants of that collection, and probably a thousand cards from the 80s and 90s that were my uncles. I doubt if they are worth much…
