Best braid for spinning reel

Featured Replies

What is the best braided line for a spinning reel? Getting a Stella 3000 and want to put the best line on it.

Do you want "the best" regardless of cost, or are you looking for good fishing line at a fair price.

If the second option, I am very pleased with the Yo-Zuri braid. Else, just buy the most expensive. I think everyone has what they call a premium product at a premium price. You won't be disappointed until your credit card bill shows up.

You'll get as many answers as their are members who reply. I couldn't tell you what the best braid is. I can only share what has worked well for me. Sufix 832 has worked very well for me and Sufix 131 even better. You're mileage might vary. Experiment with different brands and see what works best for you.

If you trust the list of '' most popular line'' of a big fishing equipment retailer, Power Pro is there with three other products.

I've used Power Pro since their introduction and haven't found a reason to explore other options.

I’m using Berkeley X-9 , it the quietest I’ve found.

Someone else already said you'll get as many different answers as there are users on this one. That being said, I use PowerPro on both spinning and casting.

I've narrowed down to two...

Seaguar Smackdown for 15# and higher - casting, mid-range spinning (shaky, free-rig, etc)

Sufix Revolve for 10# and under - finesse spinning.

I've got 832, 131, and PEX8 rigged on spinning rods in the boat right now. I have Yozuri, PP, and another on rods in the basement. My dad throws X9 and I've fished his there also. I've come to the position that I don't like 4-carrier braid at all (original PP, Yo Zuri). The 8+ carrier braids just handle better for me. Between the ones I have in the boat, I really like 131 for handling (just a little stiffer and slicker than 832) but it doesn't come in high vis so that limits where I use it some. 832 is my baseline braid. It just flat out works and isn't crazy priced. I put PEX8 on a rod this year so I haven't fished it yet. But I can tell you from handling it in the house and loading it on the rod, this is a whole nother animal. I went with the 15# and it's so thin that you can barely see it. If it wasn't bright pink holy moly. For what I got it for (FFS jig and minnow rod) I think it's going to be perfect but I have to see. If I was using it for my neko rig, I'd have to go heavier.

Seaguar PeX8. I was advised for bass fishing 18 or 21lb is a good choice.

Any lighter and there is chance of it breaking.

I’ve been using it since last fall without any problems. Seaguar gold 10lb for leader. Casting distance is awesome!

Power Pro, Suffix and Seaguar are all good and treated me well for years. Last year I spooled up some Daiwa J-braid 8 and I don't see changing back to the others. Smooth, quiet, durable, manageable... it has everything you could ask for in a braid.

Pex8 gets my vote as well just a bummer it isn't available in bulk spools. You will need a lot of backing to fill a 3k

I’ve heard about 13x, is it quiet, or do you hear the whirrrrr when you cast?

A while back @WRB-2.0 had told me about a braid called fins. He said size to pound test was smaller and it was very smooth.

I’ve never found anybody else that has used or heard of it but it got good reviews

I have used PP too for a long and have tried a lot of the more "advanced" braids. The problem is that the more supple and quiet they are, the more they wind knot. I did go down from 10 lb to 8 lb in PP and it makes a lot of difference and is plenty strong.

I used Fins Windtamer 15 on a spinning rod. I was suckered in by name :). Braid was fine enough, but wind knots were definitely no better than any other braid .

I also bought some based on Tom's opinion. I have some 6# Windtamer (yellow) on a BG 1500. Box says 1.5# mono equivalent. Just know line this thin basically has zero abrasion resistance. I added a leader. Something I seldom use. I'm using 45# 40G (blue) on a couple casting reels. Have one reel spooled with 60# Original PRT (yellow) for a frog rod. It's 14# mono equivalent according to the box. Probably will drop down to 50# when this spool runs out.

As yet I haven't tried the Fins 15#, 20#, 25# and 30# I have on hand in different Fins lines. I also bought some X9 based on reviews. None spooled yet. I didn't use much braid up north but plan on using it a lot more since retiring to Florida. It will take some time before I can come to a solid conclusion on any of the braid I have. So far I am liking the 45# 40G. Actually I doubt I'll be dissatisfied with any of the braid I have.

I also have some 832 on a couple reels. I've used their 30# Ghost (white) that came on a used Alphas Type F for a couple years. Handles fine since removing the tight spots. Also have 10# Ghost on a spinning reel.

Sufix Performance in 40# was the first braid I ever used. It went on an STXL Gen1 that went with me to Florida for several years. Turned almost white but still did the job until I had to remove it after a day of casting a 3/4 oz. spoon tied direct. Line twist was horrible after that.

The best.... Well it's crazy expensive but I have not found it's equal. Is it worth the price? No way but it's always sold out. I found it a year or so ago for a decent price on Amazon, plus I had a gift card.

Below is the line I would recommend. I have it on a few reels in #1.2. It holds up pretty well, cast like a dream, and is the best I have found yet when it comes to holding a leader knot.

@FishTank

The purple meter marks look cool, too.

Those two lines have the toughest FEP+Si coatings out there.

The coating on YGK BornRush is supposed to have a distance advantage on spinning cast. It has also held up well for me here.

I second this. Just tired J-braid 8. I don't see any reason to try anything else.

I love the Academy store brand 8 strand braid. I use the 10 lb on my spinning rods. It’s very smooth, strong and never had an issue. $10 a spool as well. Love it

I've pretty much have just settled in on using 832, been using it for years with no issues, from 6lb to 40lb.

Was contemplating getting Daiwa X8 as I've heard a lot of good things about it, that it's YGK rebranded.

But I just brought a couple of spools of 832 on the BPS sale, so that didn't happen.

All braid made in Japan is made by Izanas, but that doesn't make anything YGK rebranded.

They all buy their bulk drums spec'd from Izanas menu, available fiber grades, weaves, dyes, coatings.

It's made in a run on a drum-sized spool to their spec from the menu, then repackaged into reel-charge spools marked for the brand. The one spec it all meets is JAFTMA for consistent diameter, but the bettter lines made with higher grade fiber and tighter weave will exceed JAFTMA breaking strength for diameter, and the toughness of the coatings can vary considerably.

For me, the life of the braid is gone when coating peels tying a leader knot, and the better lines last longer than 3 years.
