Oldham Lures and JoBaby Lures both have Tilapia colors that I like and photos attached. On both of these jigs, I like the "NEW" Rage Tail Blue Craw or Hard Candy color as trailers. On the JoBaby jig, I also like the Big Tex color. I'm not by myself on the color choices... Both company owners choose these as their favorites as well. They both make heavier than 1oz jigs for fishing deeper waters... but their Tilapia colors come in all sizes! In the lakes that I fish, Gar and carp are the ones that get hit most often. I've had several incidents with each recently while scooting across the water at higher speeds but the strange incident for me this year happened while idling over a mid lake hump in 15ft water. My buddy noticed a school of about 10 big carp just under the surface and just as I shut the motor off, 1 of them made a bee line straight at us and rammed the side of my boat hard enough to knock itself out I looked it over closely and it didn't appear to be blind or injured otherwise so I eased off and fished a ledge nearby. A few minutes later the carp regained consciousness and swam away. I think it might have been a territorial response or something because the fish definitely targeted the boat with aggression. We laughed about it later wondering what the other carp thought about their buddy acting a fool like that Big O www.ragetail.com

Hard to understand... One would think that 1oz would be banned before smaller, must be about water fowl IDEAS. I wonder if there is enough real science proof and firm results to determine this to be necessary or is it the HUGGERS running wild again? What about the billions of lead wheel weights on our watershed roadsides... seems that the lead content from the bar ditch runnoff should be their target instead. I think they should spend their time and money walking our roadways to retrieve all of the thrown wheel weights that they've helped to litter our roads with! Big O www.ragetail.com

My thoughts... Although it is not what many have preached in the past and possibly different than many still believe today, I have found from 40 yrs of jig fishing and fishing beside some of the best in the business, that regardless of water temps, the additional bait action on the fall or with minimum movement of the rod tip, makes a bass eat faster! I think that while fishing jigs, soft plastics or other slow style bottom bumpers in cold conditions when fish are more dormant, it is the speed that the fisherman moves his bait or the speed that he covers any given piece of water that determines his bite success and not because of less action from his chosen bait. When you find fish in colder conditions, it's important to be closer to them with your presentation for a slightly longer period of time to allow them to become more aware of its presence, and any additional action of your bait will only speed up this process. In fact, once a given group of fish are disturbed by one of them getting caught, often the rest of them wake up and become more eager to eat! It's about your bait or presentation disturbing their slumber enough to get them to strike and high action baits along with a slower more diligent presentation does exactly that... again IMO. I feel it important to look at past thought processes, types of baits that were available to the market that had no action other than what was achieved through rod tip movement. Also look at the variety of popular cold water baits that are effective. Then dissect the process to determine why. A quick example is Rattletrap style baits that can be heard from extreme distances that disturb a bass' slumber from afar only to get smashed when it arrives in front of the fish... They're alerted previously from the noise and vibration that is coming ever closer and bringing a fish out of it's slumber, then they EAT when it arrives. How fast was the action on that bait? To the other point of jigs or soft plastics, IMO - profile, action and experience are the keys to focus on. We have a variety of rigging systems, terminal tackle and bait profiles available today that can represent a similar or the same visual as jigs. Although a jig n trailer is extremely effective in many situations, a short compact Soft Plastic rigged with a colored and pegged weight represents a similar or same presentation in most instances. The only differences between the two IMO is that a jig is more rigging friendly and a Soft Plastic rigged accordingly is a bit more weedless or snag free. There are other factors to consider, but these are the basics. The football jig and some of the newer brush jig designs are the only style jigs that might have a real advantage over a soft plastic because they drag the bottom with the trailer and hook pointing straight up toward the surface. This exact presentation is difficult to reproduce with soft plastics. Big O www.ragetail.com

J Francho is right... A vertical presentation when pitching or flipping is more desirable and line bow from wind causes excessive line drag over waves, limbs etc. Plus when covering deeper water with the same presentation style, the heavier weight allows faster coverage to locate fish. Since vertical fall and fall rate are both key ingredients to dialing in the bite, these are things to consider: Larger profile or higher action baits have more drag or slower fall rates than others. Line size and type (braid or mono/fluoro) have different fall rates. Wind bowing the line causes slower fall rates especially in brush and grass. There's more line drag in deeper water and it requires more time to cover, especially if the bite isn't suspended but on the bottom. The amount of weight we use can help counteract these conditions... Hope that helps Big O www.ragetail.com

Might slow down a bit. Many folks think that because the fish are generally MOVING shallow to feed... fast baits are the answer. I believe that the word "moving" gets stuck in our brains and we think that the Bass are constantly on the move. Shallow fish are just as likely to hit slow "bottom scooters" during these conditions, because they're often holding on or near bottom structure in ambush mode, waiting on a meal. I advise scouring the likely areas with your quick baits and if unsuccessful, change to slow presentations in the areas you feel is most likely holding fish. Hope that helps Big O www.ragetail.com

Hooked another Freight Train!!! She fooled me from the get-go running straight at me on the hook set, and when she turned things got interesting, LOL. Glad I was using braid... She ate a Rage Smokin' Rooster in Falcon Craw color rigged on a 5/0 Moaner Stick'r hook and 1oz tungsten. I was pitchin to 14 ft bushes on a break line. Cold fronts and wind have been a standard here in Texas for the last couple of weeks so the bite changes often... keeps me guessing a little, this time of year Big O www.ragetail.com
