  1. I put them on most of my minnow style baits. When the lure is at rest the feather will pulsate which I think helps. I also have put them on a couple of square bills & pulled them alongside the boat to see what find of action the lure had. I did not notice a difference but when I stopped it & as it floated up the feather had movement, again I think it helps.
  2. Wow I hope all is well, My Prayers go out to him & his family.
  3. I went to the lake yesterday to secure my water lines before the Freeze last night. While there I looked at both my Antares & Calais DC reels.I found they are different. My Antares has W,A,M,L & the Calais has W,A,L,X. All 10 had a spool tension knob. I guess you have just adjust the brakes for each bait you use. The spool tension must be preset for each type of line used. Sorry I was not much help.
  4. Good Answer A-Jay. I don't fish when it's that cold anymore but when I did I would just dip the rod in the water each time they froze over it was a quick process.
  5. My equipment is up at the lake & that is a picture of a Calais DC. On the Antares the letters on the mode selection(line type) is different as I recall. It has an A=More Control, easier to skip & pitch W= Wind mode, adjust speed of the spool for the wind condition L It looks more like a angle= best for all around performance & long distance I don't remember what the 4th letter is. Once you choose your mode setting you choose your braking power setting. There is 8 settings for each mode, you don't have open your side plate to do this. That knob is the one that sticks thru the side plate & it has 8 marks on it from min to max. Remember to check your braking setting when you change modes. I adjust the spool tension with the knob on the handle side & don't mess with that one.
  6. You have purchased an excellent reel, I have four of them. The link above should help a lot. When I got my first one I went to a Japanese Restaurant & found a cook who was willing to help. I met him with the reel & manual & he got me squared away It did not take long as I had a copy of the Calais DC manual & made notes on it. We were done in less than 30 min. & I gave him $10.
  7. I am 77 years old & pushing 78 kind of hard. To improve- more time on the water. Must get up before the crack of noon. Strengths-Cork fishing Weakness- Can't see the cork once it gets 5 ft. from the boat. Goals- To find my way back once I leave the landing. The guys in the club helped me with this, they bought me a 50 lb. sack of flour so I can leave a trail & follow it back.
  8. As everyone has said at that price point they are all good. I will say this,I have many Shimano reels with over half in the high end range. I have 2 Daiwa Zillion 100 SHLA's that are very good reels. Here is what I notice, When I have been fishing a few hours & switch to the Daiwa set up it takes a couple of minutes to get use to it. It bothers me enough that I have ordered 2 Shimano Scorpion's 201XG's to replace them. I guess I just like all the same brand.
  9. Catt you are dead on.
  10. I have been retired since 2005 & all I do is bass fish. I get to pick when I want to go so there is no harsh weather & usually no week-ends during the peak seasons. Here we can fish all year so I get a lot of time on the water & like Catt if I am not fishing I am reading about it or working my gear or boat.
  11. Preytorien I have not had a lot of time with my Scorpion 71XG but found that you can cast lite baits a good distance. I was casting a unweighted lizard in shallow water & caught a few fish today. This reel is going to be special. Your post above mine is spot on.
  12. I learned a very long time ago once you give a spot to a friend pretty soon after it's a community hole. It cost a lot of money to learn a big lake so if someone ask where I caught them I'll them the very general area & leave it at that. There are many who will only fish other people finds & will not look around for new spots. I fish alone during the week 99% of the time & never keep a bass unless I gut hook one.
  13. You have to leave the drink sitting on the front deck of the boat & drink it thru a straw so your hands are free.
  14. Drink enough scotch & you will not know if it's running true & if you did you would not give a darn.
  15. I have fished the 3/8 oz. since the mid 70's & caught many largemouth on them.
  16. I have spooled them up with 14 lb Sunline Shooter & have placed them on a Orochi xx 6'10" M/H jig & spinnerbait rod & a Orochi xx 6'8" M/H jerk bait special. It's a nice fit.
  17. It arrived from Digitaka in Japan today at lunch time. I'll be using both of them this week.Thank you all for the info.
  18. Back in the late 70's Mann's Bait Co.made dragonflies out of plastic. I had a bunch of them & used them with spinning gear & they worked quite well. I'll have to look thru my old gear to see if I have left. I had forgot all about them I am glad I read this post.
  19. WRB I was wondering the same thing. I guess I'll try Google

  21. Wow nice catch B/B86. I ordered a Scorpion 71xg about 3 weeks ago & when I received it I thought I had make a big mistake. I did not think that little reel would handle a decent size fish. Your picture has put my mind at ease. I have not had a chance to get out & use my reel yet but hope to this week. I wanted to get 2 of them when I ordered but was unsure of what it could do. Now I'll spring for the 2nd one. Thanks again for the picture.
  22. Wow they are a work of art, I would not fish them. Nice job
  23. No way would I buy that Unless I had more Info including asking price
