  3. Just talked with my guide for the outing, Gary Harlan (Roger Stegall's Professional Guide Service). Big fish are on beds right now, it's all about numbers for awhile. 40+ days of "tournament bass" are a possibility, but last weeks contest (140 boats) only produced a 5 1/2 lb big bass. On the other hand, I posted this in the thread running in "General" last week: KVD won the Classic fishing the Red Eye Shad. Here's another story, an e-mail I received this morning: Ok guys, Attached are a few pictures from my blackberry of the largemouth I caught last Thursday at Pickwick. Was all alone so I wish I had a better camera and better pictures, but it was mighty cool to me. Fish was 26.5 inches long and had a girth of 22.5 inches. I had a board to measure her with, but took fishing line to get girth and measured later. Caught her on a gravel bar in about 7 ft of water at 1:00 last Thursday on a Strike King Red Eye Shad 1/2 ounce with Vicious 12 pd test fluorocarbon and a Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Elite Reel and a Bass Pro Shops 7'0 ft medium heavy cranking stick. Was slowly pumping it down the gravel bar when it just loaded up on the fall. First fish I caught of the day and really she did not fight that much. Dead pull, strong but I figured I just had a fish foul hooked or in top of head. She bulldogged under the boat and when she came out and floated up, she had it right in top lip and just gave up. I was kinda in shock I guess and ran water for live well and called dad (he was at work of course) to get him to pull up records which in Alabama for public water was 14.9 or so. I took the x-tool and weighed her and it bounced between 13.1 and 13.3. Not wanting to hurt her, I put her back in live well as I tried to figure out what to do. Nobody was anywhere around and I took her out for as many pictures as I could with a cell phone (no other good camera). I then took her measurements to verify weights as the only scale I had was x-tool in the boat. After 2-3 minutes of her in the live well, I cranked up and idled back to the exact area i caught her and let her swim away, in which she TORE out of my hand. I have never caught anything close to this (10 lbs biggest), nor will I, I am sure on area waters, but it was a very humbling experience to finally see one this big in our lake we love so much. We have one of the most special resources in the world close to our home and I just hope we can keep seeing these things happen. Also, Jimmy Mason caught a 8-2 smallmouth yesterday up there and is putting pictures on his website on a guide trip, so it is getting awesome. Thanks for the listen. Lance Walker MEMPHIS BPS 8-)
  4. So...Some like Spiderwire, others don't... Ain't that surprising? Try it for yourself.
  5. Man, you're on fire!
  6. Yes, YOU are the "you" in my previous post. -Kent
  7. That's one heck of a bag of fertilizer! 8-)
  8. The tournament will be over and we are fishing during the week. The lake will not be crowded and the fishing should be excellent. I hope some of the regional guys that haven't signed up will be able to come down for a day or two. I would like to meet you in person and maybe plan to fish another day down the road. -Kent
  9. Well now, I was with you last fall when you landed your PB smallmouth. That was a fine fish! 8-)
  10. Mike, you and I are with Speedy Tuesday. 8-)
  11. 6 1/2' - 7' Medium Power/ Fast Action or XF. Look at the specs on the St. Croix Website for the Avid AVS68MXF. Even if this is not the rod you choose, it will help you evaluate others you might consider. http://www.stcroixrods.com/product/avid-series-spinning 8-)
  12. X3 I have the right handed version, CH50MG. The CH51MG is EXACTLY what you are looking for. Good luck! 8-)
  13. Worms and crankbait gear is not the same. Use what you have for crankbaits and get a Medium Power/ Fast Action rod for soft plastics. Major retailers ALWAYS have there combinations on sale throughout the year. This might be ticket, but ONLY on sale: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_102965_100003000_100000000_100003000_100-3-0 I would go with the 7' rod combined with the Citica CI200E. 38-954-582-05 Read Item Notice 1 below CI200E 7.8 OZ RIGHT-HAND 6.3:1 27" 8/180, 10/155, 14/110 (LB/YDS) BXB70MT 1-PIECE 10 GUIDES 8-17 LB 1/4-5/8 OZ 7' M FAST HANDLE B $174.98 In Stock 8-)
  14. Welcome aboard! Before posting again, please take a few minutes to read through FAQs and looking around the website. The various sections are pretty much self explanatory. -Kent a.k.a. roadwarrior Global Moderator p.s. There are better alternatives than Spiderwire.
  15. Who was the OP? Maybe he was editing and blew himself up! Repost if you like and I will delete this thread. -Kent
  16. Think depth, cover, structure and wobble. Right now, in the Mid South, lipless cranks are hot. Fished over gravels bars; above or through grass. Most bass are being caught in 4'-8' of water. As the water warms, more wobble and greater depth. Around structure and cover shallow lures also come into play. The key is often running into obstructions, ticking the top of vegetation or digging the bottom. Here are a few specific suggestions: XCalibur Xr50 (blue chrome/ orange) Norman Fat Boy (redear pattern) LC Rick Clunn 2.5 & 3.5 (pick your favorite colors) Rapala DT10, DT16 and DT20 (craw pattern) Bomber DD22 (white and/or sexy shad) 8-)
  17. I would guess it lasts indefinitely, but if you are looking for suggestions: MegaStrike and JJ's Magic are favorites around here. 8-)
  18. Nice fish, great pics! 8-)
  19. No. The Alabama license covers all of Pickwick to the dam. The Tennessee license is more limited. However, in your case you will need a TN to fish below the dam. So, 1 week AL and the shortest license for TN. We are fishing Tuesday below the dam, but we'll get your license the day of the trip. -Kent
  20. A jig & trailer might look like a crawdad to a bass, just like it resembles one to us. On the other-hand, maybe it's a potential meal that looks like "just another bug" to a fish. p.s. Crawfish are distributed throughout most of the world. Chances are pretty good that they inhabit your waters whether you have seen them or not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crayfish 8-)
  21. Man, that's special. Congratulations on a day with your girl! 8-)
  22. I guess pictures can be deceiving...You could have said 6 lbs without blinking an eye. Great fish, fantastic pics!
  23. Hmm... Maybe you guys are doing better, but Pickwick is on fire! http://www.fishpickwick.com/fish_report.htm p.s. KVD won the Classic fishing the Red Eye Shad.
