Drag, how to set correctly
The old school way of setting drags is to mount the reel on a rod, string the guides, and tie a loop. Have a second person hold a quality scale... Hook the loop to the scale and lift the rod to a 45° fighting angle. Have the person holding the scale shout out the weight. Re-adjust the reels drags and lift again until you reach approx. 1/3rd the lines breaking strength.. Just my .02¢ Good Luck & Tight Lines All!!

Spinning Reel?
That style trigger system is all the boss uses here. I just got done cleaning her "01" 4000 Sidestab with a QuickFire II system. It isn't as balanced as the Stradic, Sustain, and the trigger can be a knuckle buster (don't know about line looping the trigger), and can go real out of balance if you remove/break the trigger. I personally don't use spinning gear except my UL's for panfish and they are floooogers (took the place of my Quantum UL reels)... Tight Line All!!

But when you switch off to a lighter lure are you re-adjusting the free spool and braking on the reel?.....Also is the rod rated for light line/lures? Not really, what do you expect going after small fish with heavy BC gear (even trying to throw lighter baits it is still considered heavy gear).. If your trying to have more fun catching the small fish you say you have, then I would switch from BC gear to a butt load lighter spinning gear...I personally get a kick out of bass fishing with ultra lite spinning gear.. Haven't caught any quality northern strain black bass that I would say put up a fight (on BC gear), since I left the west coast and the big Florida strains out there... Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

Ambassadeur Reel Question
Actually all you need is to clean her up really well. Do an extra special job on the spool bearings, change out the pawl, clean and re-lube the medium cog or idler gear that drive's the worm gear....Use as little grease as possible, and only single drops of oil... Don't use (NEVER) any grease in the IAR, only oil and do it the way I described above... Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!

New rods for Skeet...
No offense to Skeet (I like him) but $90 will pretty much cover a set of Fuji Ti SiC's and a few cork rings. ;D I expect he meant to say the best materials available in a $90 rod. Not may of those on the market. : You really know where the blanks will come from, and what components will be used, now don't you.... Tight Lines!!!!

revo drag
newfish, Mount the reel on the rod run the line out the guides, tie up the scale to the tag line.. Then run a loop around a tree trunk or heavy (that takes two to lift) log and hook the scale to it. With the rod at a fighting 45° angle lift and have someone read the scale. Repeat tightening the drags each time and repeat until you have the drag star turned tight (without a wrench). Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

Confused about brakes
You must have a 5600CL Rocket.... Yes you do... No they are always on... Because with that style of blocks they are always on, the only way they don't influence the setting is to remove the blocks (they just slip on and off)..Your problem with CC adjustments is probably with the plastic keeper that sits at the end of the spool shaft. These keepers lose their grip on the shaft and can cause a lack of, or over adjustments in free spool... Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

Ambassadeur Reel Question
Yea he has a newer version that has a one-way bearing pack or IAR.... You need to clean the one-way bearing and inner sleave, dry well, then lightly swab (take a q-tip wetted with bearing oil) the pins in the one-way bearing with reel oil. Re-assemble, making sure your drag spring washers are in the right orientation like so (), and you should have a solid IAR and good drags.... Yes spool bearings to ABEC5, worm gear and bearings, etc.Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!

revo drag
If you have been in the reel before, or not nervous about opening it up. Then I would go back into the reel and re-move the crank stack. Remove the drag pads from the main gear, and only wipe them off (including the metal disk's) real good, then re-stack and re-assemble. You should have drags, I would NOT soak those drag pads.. Also make sure when you re-stack that you place the drag spring washers in the proper orientation ... () Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!

Newbies with rod building questions. Updated Links!!
Newbies with rod building questions.... With more and more anglers getting curious about the art of building rods. Many newbie builders come onto a site like this and ask general questions like. What do I need to build me a rod?, or give me a list of the supplies I need. It has taken me 15 years of trial and error to come up with what I have in my shop. I could sit here and write a list of the tools and procedures that I use to build a quality rod. But many would still not understand the terminology and or the reasons for a step that would be described. I have placed an article showing the many steps of The Birth Of A Custom Fishing Rod on-line, while the article shows and tries to explain the steps, without some basic knowledge of what is written, it is still not understood by a newbie builder that hasn't done any reading on the subject. More self help article's. I recommend to all newbie builders you have to get a basic education. Building a rod is not done over night. It isn't even done in a weekend. It takes time to idealize and produce a fishing tool that will do the job. Many of my own builds can take over 30hrs to produce. The different steps taken in a build all have a reason. Going into building a rod even if just once in a lifetime, can be an expensive disaster if a builder doesn't understand at least the basics of the art. Yes that's right it is an art. The first thing I recommend is getting the basic's by reading, this is easy and not expensive. If you are serious about building a quality rod, then I recommend starting with the following book: Rod-Building Guide by Tom Kirkman $14.95 Then there is always a need for some sort of resources, this link is to my rod sites Rod Building Resources page. This page has links to all of the rod building resources that I have used (I am not affiliated with any of them) and they are there to help a builder find and research the different components that may be needed to complete a quality rod build. If you really want to understand what goes into a quality custom rod then I recommend that you visit my site at the DG Rod Works and follow all of the links. It is there to try and educated new builder's as to the many facets of producing a custom fishing tool, and some of what can be accomplished on their own if they are so inclined. Once you have some basic knowledge of what to expect when researching an idea for building your own rod, the best source for educated help on the net is Rod Building . org Message Board.. While many posters will get answers to their request for directions on how and what do I do, to build me a stick, poll, rod, that is the most efficient tool I can have. I hope no one reading this with aspirations of building a rod finds this to be to brutal, it is just to clear up some of the request that have been posted for direct answers without any research on the posters behalf. There are almost no standards when it come to custom building, and a list or how to answer, here on this fine forum will not do any good without research and an some education on the new builders part. I need a new worm rod!!!
DW, I am sorry if I came across like I didn't want to work with you. I also don't do business through PM's, you said you read my site but you never e-mailed me through the site and page I sent you to...... You also didn't like the burl we use and wanted standard cork. The site stated we only built in burl... Your PM's said you knew what you wanted (Loomis), I tried to explain that Loomis building blanks don't offer what you wanted (Mossy Back) to builders. I also spotted a post of yours that stated you were probably going to pick up a Kistler Magnesium TS... This is when we decided to get a list of reputable builders (from TackleWorks) in your state that you could contact for help deciding or building your worm rod for you. It would save you a butt load of change in shipping insurance and handling. Sorry.....

revo drag
Sounds like braided line without a backer...If it were oil on the pads they all would have to have oil on them, and there wouldn't be any drags at all with that much oil..I don't think he sent it to me (heck I don't use oil on reels anyway, just bearings), anyway I can't find any reference to his reel in my files. I am curious as to who he sent it too So you guys have the same answers I have.. I pm'd him earlier no answer yet. Tight Lines All!!!!
