Stupid Rig - Weedless Tubes

Featured Replies

What tube jigs do you recommend for Weedless or stupid rigging tubes. Tubes were one of my top producers this year and I’m tired of snagging with exposed hooks   Mostly use 2.5”-3.5” tube baits

I texas rig if I want to go weedless but tender tubes or power tubes are the two that I've found that work best for me. A double dipped and/or salted tube is too stiff for a good hookset when texas rigged. Although I don't know if I've tried stupid rigging with a softer tube now that I think of it. Either way I also like the fact that I can texas rig with a  Gamakatsu EWG hook. It gives me the confidence to know that if I lose a fish it's because I screwed up and not the hook.

I prefer the Owner Phantom Hook vs. Stupid style... but both can work..

What's a stupid rig? Is there a pic available?

I've used the stupid tube with good results but i've had better success using Oldham's Weedless Tube-Lure. I fish in rivers with a lot of snags and the Oldham's holds up better. The guard doesn't seem to bother the fish.

Have used the shaw myself but like the gitzit glider style better.  TW has them.  They are flat with a hole at the top...slide them in...take an EWG hook and run through kind of like a Texas style and your set.

Owner Phantom's look neat, a modern upgrade to the original Mister Twister design style, but it's not for "Stupid Tube" rigging. To the best of my knowledge, the Stupid Tube style was developed right here in Indiana. I've had the pleasure of fishing with some of the originators over the years. Anyway, Bite Me, Secret Lures and HCT (Honey Creek) all sell jighead versions locally, though once you've seen the design, I'm sure you can find other similar brands.

I use Arkie Jerky Head jigheads found in Walmart for less than $3

I have some of the Owener Phantoms and the hooks on them seem way too thick for the tacke I fish tubes on.  I found some stupid-tube jigs on ebay with thinner hooks, there are a few different vendors.

I ended up giving up on all tube rigging methods other then Sled/Draggin/Crawler heads.  They are fast to change out plastics, give great hooksets, and are very snagless.

I googled that and didnt find anything fishing related

Cadman's finesse tube jig w/weedguard. I throw a lot of 2.5-2.75" tubes for river smallies and these on a 1/0 hook do the trick.

River Rock and Fitt Lures also sell the "sled" style heads.

Is this the Sled Head you use?

Oh, sorry,  I thought the terms where in more common use, I’m talking about the style of head.

They’re very expensive but as they become more common the price seems to be coming down, I get mine for a dollar per head unpainted from a guy in a smallmouth forum.

I pour my own, about the only way I can fish a tube through the rocks with zebra mussels all over them.

No automatic alt text available.

I got to go with the Phantom Owner hooks.  I still may get one caught once in a while but it's way better than the alternative.

May I ask the number of this mold and will it accept 1/0 hooks? Thanks!

I haven't tried anything as small as a 1/0. I pretty much use a 3/0 exclusively as it fits a 3.5-4 inch tube perfectly.

Has anyone tried a casting weight t-rigged yet.
