I propose a BR rule that states anyone with less the 100 posts cannot resurrect threads more than 2 years old.

New members see this and probably figure all old threads are fair game.

If I see a zombie thread opened, I explain it is outdated and replies may be minimal.

 

 

@Munkin: I can see both sides to this thought.  On the one hand, I find myself sometimes getting irritated by thread resurrection; however, when I first joined BR, I probably managed to resurrect a thread or two because I wasn’t aware of the operation of this site. To be honest, information that I discovered and considered important was “old hat” to most of the more experienced and knowledgeable members. I guess I wonder if such a rule would discourage newer members from participating.

 

Hopefully, I am not hijacking the thread, but I have a couple of thoughts. 

 

1. How does BR handle the situation when a newer member inadvertently activates an old thread? How does BR educate new members without discouraging them from participating in the forums. There is a learning curve that, in my mind, has to be overcome.

 

2. In a related scenario, I never was comfortable with the “Search” capability and did not effectively use it until I spent some time playing with it.  Now I find myself getting irritated when I feel that a search could effectively answer a question. But, I had to learn how to use it. Heck, even now I get some surprising (and often unwanted) results if I’m not careful.

 

Could there be a “canned response” to either of these situations that will inform without negatively affecting the poster? I appreciate the suggestion, but I guess I wouldn’t begin to know how to handle it tactfully.

I open a thread based on the subject matter not the date it was written.

i figured that is exactly what a person with under 100 posts should do.  They use the search function and post accordingly based on the content and not the start date.  

I have seen old threads brought back just to verify if the information was still valid.  It's not near as bad as what is the best rod for 100 bucks.

What bothers me is someone commenting of a thread from 2011 that says "I use senkos"

Well said @Mike L. I also open a thread based on the subject matter and the date it was written does not matter much. What matters is the information in the thread and there are plenty of old threads in this forum that are very good. With that said this particular subject reminds me of a bitter old man that screams ''get off my lawn!'' to a kid.

Good idea but I doubt everyone will use the new scales they get since they will be disappointed in how much their catches weight. Many times the people that ask to guess the weight of a bass do not even get a length and girth measurement so it will be hard for them to weigh bass.

It's a circular process. The new guy will start a new thread talking about how he likes senkos and the only response he gets is a link to the old thread about the same topic.

Just might be some new perspectives in that department......Like mine.    So what is the preferred method to open a discussion on a previously covered subject and let's face it most EVERYTHING has been discussed at one time or another?  Resurrect the old discussion for new input or start a new thread?

Don't worry about what one person thinks.  There is no rule preventing old threads being resurrected.  Discussion is discussion.  Learning is learning.  The last members we want to prevent from posting are new members.
