Not sure totally what you mean. I don’t think I’ve gotten ripped off. Maybe made a poor color choice or something like that. I was all hot to buy a couple of Rapala Tail Dancer lures years ago. Thought I would kill some river smallies on them. They never produced well for ME. But it’s a good lure for somebody. I’m a Rapala fan boy but that one never panned out. 
 

But if you are talking something like that fish lure that had a light bulb or something like that in it or it made noise or talked underwater. I never fell for anything like that and hope you didn’t either. 

Gimmicks like the dancin eel or helicopter lure 

Honestly, even the cheeziest marketing has promoted products that still work.  The message may be suspect, but the products generally are rooted in something that works.  Cases in point, fluorocarbon lines, braid, scented plastics, hooks with funky points, Flying Lures, Helicopter lure, Dancin' Eel, Banjo Minnows, Winn Grips, Hypalon, Septon, Carbon Fiber this and thats, High Modulus, IM6, IM8, colored rods, E-glass, Boron, split grips, guides made of rare materials, long cast spools, wide spools, T-wings, UV coatings, and lastly, to quote KVD, "An erratic motion bass can't ignore!"  None of these are rip-offs.  I'm not even gonna comment on heavy cover fishing.  It isn't for the faint, but it works.

Lying doesn't serve their best interests.  I take the hype with a grain of salt.

I would post a good up to date example of a gimmick, but last time I did I was accused of trying to sell a companies product that I do not work for. It cost me penalty points or something on here.  So I will say helicopter lure because I think that one is outdated and safe to mention.  

The world is always doing it's best to separate you from your money...ALWAYS. 

 

Bass fishing, hunting, buying a new car/truck, refrigerator, clothing, phones, computers, food...it's all about the latest and greatest...Companies are always looking for the next great thing...to drive more sales.  It's all about increasing market share and profit.  

 

And that ain't an all together bad thing...drive innovation and creativity. 

 

It's a sad thing when a good product is discontinued...I have a bunch of old Cabela's branded hunting clothing (Gore-tex, Cordura, Thinsulate...).  They don't make them like they used to...

I have two pairs of dark green Cabela’s polypropylene long Johns that I bought in, oh, 1991. I’ll be using them again this year. My daughter bought me a new pair for Christmas two years ago.

What? You mean Roland Martin didn't win all of those bassmaster angler of the year awards with the Helicopter lure? He sure tried to sell it though. 

The Helicopter lure does catch fish. If it get someone into fishing that otherwise would not even try, then I hold no resentment for his endorsement. They aren’t trying to sell it to us anyway.

Not that I would look forward to using one, but. . . . . one of, if not THE most knowledgeable fisherman I have ever known swears to have caught many great bass on the Pocket Fisherman when in stealth fishing situations. The right tool for the job. 

 

There are anglers that can outfish most people using monofilament wrapped around a pop bottle. A Pocket Fisherman might be an upgrade for them.

Long long time ago I bought a Bill Dance baitcast combo. I thought it must be great if Ol Bill fishes with it. Right!

I am a fisherman and do not consider myself gullible or stupid, YMMV.  I make informed choices on what will work for me in my area.  I don't remember being “Forced” to buy fishing equipment.  

Those cammo wrapped rods are a gimmick . I bought three  last year on clearance.Not because of the cammo but they felt nice in the store . Man those things are heavy .I dont konw how much weight the wrap adds to it but it feels like a lot .Yesterday was the last day I'll use one of those things . I have three rods on order to replace them .

As for flipping sticks being a gimmick, don't tell Denny Brauer because he won a classic and a fair bit of money with one.

 

As far as gimmicks really haven't seen any other than gag gifts like spoons shaped as body parts or beer can or homer simpson shaped cranks. One trend that needs to slow down is fast action rods. I get it for those fishing flouro, but as a braid user I really like a moderate action rod. Thankfully some companies fast really are like a moderate in other brands.

I'm kind of with you there, for a similar but not exactly the same reason.  I do want a real fast tip, but the rest of the blank can bend more evenly, with a little less force.  Saint Croix gets it close with IPC, their ML/XF taper being one I use quite a bit that comes close to what is ideal.  I don't think it's just a braid deal either.  I like it for fluoro as well.  I want that tip to fling a bait or twitch it with a fast recovery, but have a nice, deep flex into the entire power  range of the bottom 2/3 of the rod.
