Megabass Popmax

 Currently a Daiwa Aird-X 6’ 6” M/F baitcasting rod. I only have one so can’t say I have a favorite color. I think it’s Gill.

I’ve used the bass one and the one that looks like a fired up gill. They worked so I didn’t buy any others. As I can get carried away.

I have success with a few different  Pop Max patterns.

As can be the case with many deals, it may be more about when & where I throw it,

rather than which one.

Either way, the Perch bait IS my Go To . . .

I throw them on M spinning gear and 20lb braid.

I fish these on 6'4'-6'8" MF or MXF baitcasters.

The 80 size of this looks exactly like the MB, but it actually catches fish for me, something the MB rarely does. I like the "You Know It" color.

I will throw mine on a M/XF or MH/MF rod with 12lb mono that runs on the fatter side although if I was just throwing poppers I would increase that to 17lb.

Like @A-Jay my top Pop Max (and Pop X) color is Perch. The Megabass Sexy Shad is a good color as well, especially for spring.

Sexy Shad and Secret Gill are kind of my "standard" colors but I've had luck with Black Orochi when I want to change it up, and I recently picked up a Pumpkinseed that I think offers a little variation that the other colors don't.

I fish it on a St. Croix Bass X 7'1" M/F with 15# mono.

Wild Gill or plain ol' Gill are what I use the most. I'm using a 6'9 M/F baitcaster with 40lb braid / 14lb mono leader most often. I usually use the Popmax as a walking bait first and personally have more success with a straight walk rather than a slower traditional popper style. It's probably my most used topwater lure. Big fan.

My favorite Pop Max is one signed by the man himself, Yuki Ito, at a tackle show I went to a few years back in Japan. My best producer is the Gill Female.

The River2 Sea Bubble Walker 80 is a terrible top water lure - I am happy to dispose of them properly for you ... Especially the "You Know It" , "Loon" , "Bluegill" and "Abalone Shad" colors.

Thanks a lot....now I had to go and order another one.

TW had "pumpkinseed" in stock, so that's on it's way now.

You're welcome!

I almost ordered pumpkinseed and gill too. Somehow I was able to restrain myself.

Unpopular opinion here. I think topwaters are the lures for which color means the least.

yeah im not sure the color means much either. i use gill perch and french pearl. i fish mine on an expride 6'10" medium.

I think that's (1) true, and (2) not actually an unpopular opinion. Speaking for myself, I just have favorite colors anyway and can't help myself....

I use to agree with this opinion but I've ran too many trips with 3 guys all throwing topwaters and the fish kept hitting one color more consistently than the other. Once they get switched over, everyone starts catching fish. I still feel like they're one of those baits that it probably matters the least, but it can really matter at times unfortunately.
