I shore fish for bass in SoCal and was wondering if anyone can offer advice on best mono to mono knot to tie. On one of my rigs I use a 3000 spinning reel with 8lb HiVis yellow monofilament fishing line and about 6 or 7 feet of 8lb florocarbon leader. I use it to fly line baits like fat ika's and the like. I do alot of night fishing and my eyes are bad. The HiVis yellow allows me to see strikes and pickups easier. I'm not a fan of braid so I would like to stick to mono. I am tying a blood knot currently which ties really well. However, I have had some failures with it on bigger fish. It handles 2 & 3 pounders well, but I have lost a few larger fish on it. I have tried the Alberto knot but I have trouble getting the wraps to cinch up. It works great for briad but like I said, I'm not a briad fan. Any advice on improving my ability to tie the Alberto or a similar knot for mono to mono, I would appreciate. I do not like the uni to uni and I would like something relatively easy to tie.

Blood knot or triple surgeons knot 

I would think that the problem is more the line strength than the knot. Maybe bump it up to 10 lb.

I'm not sure I understand the problem.  Why use a leader at all?

I would second the idea of just going with one line. for joining lines of similar diameters, the Alberto isn't a good choice. A blood, or uni/uni will probably works best. You have to be careful with not damaging the fluoro when cinching down. Try 4 turns, and lubing it well when tying, might need to go to 5 turns, but probably not. 

You may not need a leader. If your still wanting to use a blood knot use 5to6 wraps and use some waterproof glue to smooth the knot. Tied well,blood knots usually hold.

I'm new to this forum and am not sure how to reply to individual suggestions. So for now I want to say thank you to all that responded with advice. I still have to figure out how this site works. You all have been very helpful.

I'm pretty sure not even Alberto would do that, and I've seen him eat bait...

I would go with the uni/uni if you want the leader...otherwise just dispense with the leader. Bass aren't that line shy that the yellow mono is gonna scare them off.

 

I'd also up it to 10# and make sure it's a quality mono - Sufix Elite would be my suggestion...it's the only mono I use.

Triple surgeons is what I use because it's what I can tie with the most consistency.

To every one who has knots that slide apart. NOT BREAK APART !! There is a ABSOLUTE .....NON.... self untying knot trick I developed from losing favorite EXPENSIVE lures to fish or simple snags.

 

Works with any line or knot. Even if you accidently tie the line / knot loose.

 

Tie a simple 1/2 hitch TIGHTLY at the end of your line. Then do your normal knot.  LOOSELY  !!  It needs to be loose enough to keep pulling the simple 1/2 hitch BUMP right up to the knot. It MUST ...JAM... Snugly at the hook.  If you can do that 2 or 3 times correctly?  You will NEVER be looking at that twisted , untied knot again.

 

Braid IS IS the slipperiest line after all the coating is worn off.  The 1/2 hitch is solid after a full summer of casting Rapalas. Same knot after straightening wire hooks on snags.  

I used to use blood knot for mono to mono, but now I think I can tie double uni knot faster. I’m not gonna tell you to not use leader to hivis yellow line. It is a confident thing, but I catch plenty of fish on yellow line and it even less significant on line type at night.

 

Where I am. Cormorant & all other summer flying fish eaters .  Everything moves about very actively at night.  I do not night fish anymore.

I'm a big fan of Alberto, and Uni to Uni, but for mono to mono, or mono to floro, I prefer either a surgeons knot or a Blood knot.  Depending on the size of line one of those two is what I have used to make tapered fly leaders for 40 years.  

uni uni is my mono/mono or fluoro knot (also my mono backing/braid main knot)

 

alberto is my braid/mono or fluoro knot

Uni to uni would be my choice. I use that knot for everything except drop shoting.

Blood knot or surgeons knot are the easiest. Don't bother with the others because they are complex and I don't have the patience to bother tying them.

I find the easiest way to tie a blood knot is to join the lines with any knot, cut the tags flush, then tie a dropper loop, and then clip that off, takes about 15 seconds (finding nail clippers time not included).

The is misleading answers. You say high vis yellow mono to FC. It doesn’t matter what knot you use for FC the knot strength will less then mono main line. 

If you are convinced the clear FC is an advantage go to .001 diameter FC leader equal the knot strength. Double Uni knot is a little stronger then a blood knot.

Accurately set your drag at 2 1/2 - 3 lbs, problem solved.

PS, TW is a good resource to determine line diameter for each line and brand. 1 pint of water weighs 1 pound in a plastic grocery bag to set the drag.

 

In the OP you listed Mono to FC, is this a typo or are you looking for a mono to FC knot? Mono to Mono knots aren't the same as Mono to FC...

Thanks never thought of that. I’ll give it a try next time I need connection know. I always carry a pair of forceps anyway.

I can tie a bimini using my big toe to hold the loop...
