16# Sniper for me. If I really wanna rip it thru grass I'll throw them on a braid setup.

Mosnt of the lakes with largemouth near me are covered in aquatic vegitation, that’s why I’m considering keeping the braid to flouro leader.

  • Mono or copoly. I'm only using FC on shakey heads and t rigs these days. Braid for Ned's, mono, and copoly for everything else.

  • 15lb Big Game

Depending on the size of the chatterbait, either 10# or 15# Big Game.

What is the point of the fluoro leader on a moving bait in vegetation? Why wouldn't you just go straight braid if that's what you want to do?

What line you should use? Don't know. I mostly use heavy mono (15-20 lb), and around heavy vegetation sometimes braid, mostly 40 lb.

That’s because the lake is super clear

Seems unnecessary to me and an extra knot that can fail.

I guess straight braid is the way to go in that situation.

Makes sense. I guess I’m just paranoid they see the line.

On a moving bait like chatters and spinners, it's not that big a deal.

Whether or not to use braid is mostly personal preference. I only use braid for frogging, punching and i'm experimenting with it on some topwater baits but I'm not sold on that. I would never use it for moving baits or bottom contact baits but again that's personal preference.

A leader with braid and chatterbaits seems pretty unnecessary to me though.

I just spent a month researching the best Chatterbait setup, and here's what I ended up with

Daiwa Zillion SV TW 1000 6.3 JDM

Alpha Angler 7'2 Chatterbound rod

P-Line Ultimate Fluorocarbon 15lb

Nothing wrong at all with a 6.3 for Chatterbaits, and yes I don't think you're going to find a better line choice than 15-20lb high quality Fluorocarbon for this application.

Translates bites on slack lines when Yo Yoing them fantastically, excellent knot strength, has more stretch than braid which is very advantageous for a moving bait, and I've found it to be very abrasion resistant, more so than my fishing needs require.   It's the perfect option imho.

A month? (Insert auburn grad joke )

I like 15 lb line for it

I think I’m going to go with a 15 pound flouro, but get more use of my braid for now. Might get a 100 dollar lews and put heavy braid on it for punching/pitching and frogs.

$100 range - I'd go with a Daiwa before a Lews. CA-80 or Fuego CT.

Been eyeing the fuego for a while. Just waiting to get my drivers license so I can buy the megabass p5 super destroyer and either the Steez sv Tw or the new zillion. Starting to realize that I’m a tackle junky lol

I'm kinda a tackle junkie too - but on a budget.

This year will be the first year I spend over $100 on a rod or reel - though I do have a couple good reels that I bought used. Everything else was bought on sale.

Nice. Usually I spend under 150 on rods, but I’m branching out, knowing I will regret it.

I'm with G-Man's advice for what he uses with his chatterbaits : Either FC or Co-Poly line (anything but braid) . *You need a little "give" in your line / rod set up as it's too easy to jerk a chatterbait out of a bass's mouth with braid .

I'm with ya.  I'm using 12lb 95% of the time though.

This is why your line choice means nothing, meaning there's no wrong line choice in veg'd out lakes. That said, I can show you hundreds of quality bass caught using straight braid on chatterbaits, jigs, whatever. Clear water, or stained, Largemouth bass aren't swimming around inspecting anything. They're springing out of ambush points and positions provided by the vegetation.

If you're going to use fluoro, be sure to retie often. Chatterbaits use line tie clips that are fine wire. That, combined with their heavy-ish jig hooks, puts a lot of stress where the knot loops around the tie. It's the perfect storm to break fluoro and your heart. Personally I won't use it for this bait. I've watched my line-shy-paranoid buddy break off countless times. You're better off with copoly or mono as a leader if you must use one because you're paranoid too. Those lines can deal with the shock of slamming home the hook far better. BTW, I've never been broken off using 30lb J8 tied directly to a chatterbait or anything else.

I’m 30lb PowerPro braid to 15-20lb FC, typically Invizx. I use a moderate graphite rod and haven’t had issues with it. I have gained a lot of confidence in my connection knot and I like the invisibility and little bit of stretch it provides me.

I refuse to go straight braid unless it is chocolate milk. I also don’t enjoy throwing a reel spooled with mono or FC and use braid of every setup I own. For me, the benefits of braid apply to basically every setup I fish.
