What are some time tried lures or lure designs that still work but no one really throws anymore.

 

Like a hula popper or a jitterbug.

 

 

Weedless spoons like Johnson Silver Minnow has been replaced by Hollow body frogs and soft plastic Toads.

Prop lures like Smithwick Devil Hoarse are regionally popular.

Storm Chug Bug.

Bomber 6A & 7A series and metal lip 300 series.

The problem with the prop bait was that it was replaced by a whopper plopper. What no one realizes is that the whopper plopper will die off after some time, but the prop bait has a more natural noise that won't throw off fish.

My issue with the whopper plopper is the tiniest piece of grass stops it from spinning. Heddon torpedo I can be dragging a whole oak tree on the rear hook and the prop still spins.

Torpedos are amazing- if you look around the Denny Brauer signature Torpedo is the one (or 40) to have. Put good hooks on it, and make sure the hardware is secure. I lost a 6 pounder due to the front hook holder pulling out. I glue them in now. 

 

The originals are worth owning too, smallmouth love them.

The 1/8th oz version has caught a lot of fish for me, even a channel cat.

The pop-r's are in a class of their own. The wee craw was quite a lure, too.

The Rapala original floating, Countdown, & jointed.

 

Mepp's Aglia. Any size or color. But my favorite for bass is a number 3 with a gold blade and brown or plain tail or a black fury with orange dots. But they stopped the orange for some reason so I would go with red now. But they all work.

Yes to all of the above.  I've recently gone back to the Mepp's Aglia and Mann's Jelly worms. I still have a Jitterbug and a couple Torpedo's in my tacklebox that I use from time to time.  Time tested and proven.

Not sure how popular they still are but a white Roostertail spinner will catch just about anything that swims in this state.

I throw a Devilshorse and a bomber 6A almost every time I get on the water. Who said they quit working?

I still break out the Humpback Rebel from time to time.
