Black in Softbaits VS Hardbaits

Featured Replies

I was looking at a custom colored Black jerkbait and was thinking about when/where a Black jerkbait would be best utilized. It has been a question of mine for awhile in regards to people loving Black plastics such as worms, senkos, jig trailer etc. From what I understand some people say it excels in low visibility situations. Would the same hold true for a jerkbait??? From everything I have been learning people lean to solid whites, chartreuse and metallic colors with hardbaits in low light/visibility. Anyone want to give their .02cents??

I have purchased a few black cranks this past year.  Haven't thrown one yet, but I believe it would do well in both low and high visibility conditions.

I’ll use a few black versions of crankbaits on the river when stained pretty heavy. Dark olive is another good color in the conditions.

The part of the lake that I fish most of the time is almost always pretty discolored. So I’ve always had more luck with a black lure in low light or cloudy conditions. Including hard baits. Also the water I fish is tinted green so I hardly use green natural colored lures as they seem to disappear within inches of being in the water. Black is my green pumpkin I guess you could say. For me metallic lures, quite literally, shine best during bright sunny days. A black jerkbait sounds pretty cool to me. I might have to give that a try!

At one time there was a "secret" Rattle Trap used by a few old timers on the Harris Chain. This color is no long made.  It was a dull grey color with black stripes and a small spot of orange.  Not very impressive looking and not something you would pick up in a tackle store.  This Rattle Trap was a stone cold bass killer on cloudy and foggy days. I still throw it on occasion and it still works.

If I had but one lure to fish for bass, that lure would be black.  If you stash a bag of black worms in your pocket, you are good to go. ☺️

Around here the bass will sometimes hit a black crankbait when the water is muddy.

Black worms, lizards, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, topwater, frogs, toads.

Take that little chart showing which colors to use under what sky/water conditions & throw in the trashcan.

You will be pleasantly surprised how well black works in all conditions.

I really appreciate everyone's input! I am a color nerd, meaning i like to have all the cool colors...but i realize it matters very little most of the time. I just ordered it and we will see how this sexy lil' thing works!?

I've had some good days throwing Black Magic in 5 - 8' visibility. Nobody in there right mind would throw black in water that clear. Exactly!

My son has that exact same lure but hasn't thrown it yet! Thanks for the input.

I like black lures in all categories.  I don't know if they are more visible or not, but they do catch bass.  Especially fond of black spinnerbaits.  I do wonder why if black is more visible, than why do people recommend coloring the last few feet of braided line black in order to make the line less visible?  Black makes lures more visible, and line less visible, kind of like a thermos, keeps cold things cold, and hot things hot but how does it know.

Funny you should say that. I can't tell you how many times lately I have thought how many fishing theories contradict other fishing theories when it comes to colors and visibility/non-visibilty!!!??

TThe hot color for Berkley Max Flat worm this year is black.

Norman DD22 in black, black back dark red belly was my go colors in low light. The opposite pearl white ghost with silver flake bars also works under the same lighting same lake as black, try both!

I agree, I use Bandit and Strike King blacks in clearer river water also. I believe it’s just a great profile color for a bait. And they rattle so that can draw attention.

A lake I fish, black is not that productive. Even during those stained times. Natural shiner, Gizzard Shad’s and panfish patterns seem to work at most all conditions.

Must of been a custom run huh? I don't believe they have a Black Pointer in their regular lineup. This custom run pointer is the only Black one I've ever seen.

Yes sir! On more than one occasion Ive had somebody ask me why I was using or recommending to them a black lure… why so dark/bold? The only answer I have for them is that it just works and they have to trust me.

I’m especially fond of a black worm though. Black trick worm, black finesse worm, black senko, black mag 2. ????

Back in the 70’s and 80’s we used black a lot.  I hand painted a Spence Scout and put I tiny whit grub on the back hook.  This was a producer on grey overcast stormy days.

I throw black poppers very often. Black spinnerbaits as well. I think black is a good color for any kind of bait.

I think it would be too. You just don't see it much in hardbaits like square bills or jerkbaits

If I’m throwing a topwater it’s probably either black or white. Black always gets first nod for me. Buzzbaits, ploppers, etc.

That might have been a female bass that noticed your shirt and hat matched, and wanted to party ??

I know that this will sound nuts, but black baits (soft or hard) intimidate me. I know that they work, I just never buy them.
