Did you know...

That when you reply to a post, EVERYONE on that thread gets notified you replied to it?

Yup.  Including the person you're replying to.

That means you do NOT have to quote somebody in order for them to be notified you replied.

Pro tip.  :)

Unless you don't follow the thread - I have "Automatically Follow" turned off...have to manually engage it if I want to follow the thread. So unless they quote or tag me, I won't see it in Notifications unless I've manually set the Follow to 'On'.

They can tag you then.  Quoting just fills up the threads with gobs of copied text, making it very difficult to read.

Goodness gracious! People are still using quotes after Glenn’s request to not use them not too long ago? Let’s get it together, ladies and gents! Let’s comply. You can quote me on that. ?

I'm sorry. I'll self administer 50 lashes with my 7'6" hvy fast action.

@A-Jay Me too.

I usually quote a comment in order to make it clear what I'm replying to or talking about, not to notify the person I'm replying to. (i.e. in Latest Catch Pics where so many people are posting that it can be hard to follow a thread of conversation.) BUT, I can make sure I trim that quote down to only the relevant bits, cutting out stuff like pictures and lots of unrelated text.

I definitely want threads to be easy to read and understand.

This is cool to me for one reason.  I am on the lowish end of being tech savvy. (just ask my fishing partner...LOL)

I have been here since BR's infancy.  I am (if I am not mistaken) member 104 or 105.

I can remember way back then, Instant Messaging with  Glenn regarding very rudimentary improvements I thought would help.

How awesomely far we've come technologically here at BR.

Thanks Glenn

Yes, you have been here for 20 years!  You would think that makes you the longest-standing active member here...but RW has you beat by 12 days! LOL

But dang, there's a HUGE gap between you and the next active member.  That's a big deal!  So glad you're still here, and yes, we've come a looong way!

Here's to 20+ more years of BR...

And Kent is the 'old fart' of the group, eh. Why am I not surprised?

I really didn’t know that! ??

I am guilty of quoting because that is how I saw most people reply back. I have auto follow off as well. I do follow here and there on specific topics.  I will be more mindful of this.

Unexpectedly being tagged by Glenn is what I imagine hearing your name over the police scanner would feel like.

If you feel like you need to quote someone because you're specifically replying to something you can do a selective quote.   Simply highlight the text you want to quote and a box to post that quote will come up.  This will keep the quote small instead of the entire post.

Demonstrated below.

Just now, Woody B said:

do a selective quote

That takes up way less space than quoting the entire post.

@Glenn You are deleting quotes making it hard or impossible to tell who or what the comment is referring to.

I generally use selective quotes, but sometimes quote the whole thing. I don't necessarily do it to notify the user, sometimes it's to make it clearer what I'm talking about.

It's a lot easier for users to simply click on the Quote button than it is for them to type the @ symbol, start to type a name, and choose a user. Maybe you could consider adding an @ button?

Also, this is my first time seeing this thread, and I check in the site everyday. I only visit a few sub-forums. My point is, a lot of users probably don't know about this.
