I generally use selective quotes, but sometimes quote the whole thing. I don't necessarily do it to notify the user, sometimes it's to make it clearer what I'm talking about.

100%, quoting often adds clarity and specificity. I'm sure there's those who do use it more like a tag, but quoting helps give everybody the same point of reference when multiple people are saying related but different things.

I hear you on tidying up the threads, but quoting is a very useful tool too.

Quoting can definitely get out of hand. It was really bad before they came up with the collapsed quote. If someone posted a lot of pictures, and then others quoted them, you'd get carpal tunnel from scrolling.

I'd be okay with getting rid of the quote button altogether, so that the only way to quote would be using the selective method.

I'm confucious. Below every user's post/reply there's a + button which reveals a dialog box indicating "Quote 1 post" and a Quote button which reveals the entire post/reply. I have no idea which one I should use and why, who gets notified by either, and I have no idea how to "tag" someone, why I would want to, and how to know if I've been tagged. For this reply, I used the green button. ?

What if the Quote button was removed? Problem solved?

At times, the quote button is a source of entertainment.

Fixed that one for you, my friend.

I use the quote button to highlight specific information in a post that I’m often responding to.

Guess I won’t be doing that anymore.

I read it.

I generally try to only quote someone if I am addressing what they said directly, especially if it's not specifically part of the conversation. Like a mini side conversation.

I do not get notifications to a post unless I have started the thread, someone tags me, or I am quoted.

I didn't know of the replies in this thread that happened after I was tagged until I opened the thread again.

@ironbjorn you said: "Unexpectedly being tagged by Glenn is what I imagine hearing your name over the police scanner would feel like."

I agree. That's a great analogy, though I haven't ever heard my know over the police scanner.

I quote previous posts to ensure anyone reading knows which specific post I'm replying to.

I'd use Copy/Paste, then tag whoever I wanted to quote. 😉

I'm not saying you CAN'T EVER use it.  Just don't use it ALL THE TIME, especially if you're replying directly to the last post. Your reply will appear directly below it, so there's no need to quote it.

It's fine to use it in many cases, such as:

  • Quoting somebody further up the thread when you're addressing what they said.
  • Answering a specific question
  • Commenting on somebody's specific comment within an entire post

There's more, but hopefully this helps.

@A-Jay I'm not sure I want to quote you, but I kept

my pants on for this one. ;)
