  • I'm with @MN Fisher on this one.  Its hard to beat a loon echo across the water.   Just the other day I heard "stomping" on shore and saw this guy walking off...

  • Skunk apes crashing through the underbrush while they hunt.

Loon calls

Bluegill pops

Songbirds

Ravens

Bass topwater explosions

Dragonflies

Pure silence

Sometimes the sounds of dogs, music, people, and cars in the distance is comforting on mostly silent days. Especially in fall and winter.

Me too, Tim! I always chat with them.

There's all kinds of noises on the lake I fish most often.  Depending on what part of the lake I'm on I'm within 10 to 25 miles from a big airport so there's always jets overhead.   Some boaters play loud music.   I don't like these sounds but I enjoy the sounds of nature.   Obviously I enjoy the sound of a bass smashing a top water lure.   Like others I talk to the animals around the lake.   IE if I hear a morning dove I'll say "Good morning Dove".     Mrs B laughs at me.  I also talk to any pets that live around the lake and come to look at me.   One morning a small dog was standing on a dock barking at me.  I said "Hello dog".   A Latino lady comes down on the dock laughing and says "The dog doesn't speak English"  I said "tell it I said hello dog".   She said something (in Spanish I guess) to the dog and we had a good laugh.    I've seen her, and the dog several times since then.  She always says something to the dog in Spanish then tells me "The dog still doesn't speak English."    I need to learn how to say "Hello Dog" in Spanish.

the silence before the hookset.......it's priceless.

The call of a sandhill crane around dawn..... but preferably somewhere on the other side of the lake rather than hiding in the rushes right next to you.

I don’t hear it much on my small lakes but waves hitting the shore. My favorite would be….

IMG_8100.jpeg

Silence, peeling drag, and gentle waves kissing the kayak.

when its night and all you have is a little moonlight, hearing the blub blub blub blub of a jitterbug with a hopeful crash of water. This is peak fishing for me just ahead of the violence of a spinnerbait bite.

Hard to name the nature sounds...just about all of them are calming with the exception of the GBH dinosaur.

I also talk to all the dogs that come greet me...I so badly want to bring treats for all of them but with todays crazy people I'll probably be accused of poisoning their dog.

The other weekend I had a pontoon boat loaded with women partying and 1 dude driving the boat. They came close but had a respectful distance, yelling and "wooo" ing trying to get my attention, tried to throw me a beer (would have preferred they not throw a beer into the water) and then show me some "omelettes" on their way past.

I'm not entirely sure why but the breakfast burrito reminded me of the event. Was a fun boat....never did find the beer though.

Spinning reel drag.

Or my boat mates saying “Why do you catch all the fish?” I really like that one haha.

Mine is when a heavy bass comes up and sloshes water. It's at a lower pitch and it's thrilling, for only heavy bass can make that sound.

IYK, YK.

The day I caught my PB, on a mid-December morning, something happened that I have never seen before or since at any time of the year. Literally dozens prime early 90's era Castaic tank size bass began feeding on the surface in an area about 100 yards square. Not bunched up in a wad, but just kinda evenly spaced around that area.

I was worm fishing, but had a crankbait tied on another rod and slung it out past a point in about 10' of water and it just stopped cold. By the time I wrestled her into the boat on 10 lb monofilament, the flurry was over and that was that.

I do too. They are unusually quiet when flying compared to many other birds though. I have them accompany me descending trails on my mountain bike at night, and I really enjoy those 'animal planet' moments. They often fly just in front of me and I think they are taking advantage of my lights to hunt for critters.

Loons and that big bass topwater slosh, for sure.  But I also love when you set that big 5/0 into a really good fish and the braided line/rod kinda creak when it doesn't move right away like a smaller fish does.

Near silence, no one else around.

Too bad the majority of eagles are scavengers though.  They mostly eat dead, rotting fish.  A lot of people think they are this majestic efficient fish killer but the reality is that they eat more like a vulture.

They're thieves too, Last year I watched a Bald Eagle steal a fish from an Osprey mid flight.  Osprey eventually lost when they both death spiraled down to the water, first time I've seen that.

Twice in 2023, I saw an eagle trying to kill an osprey. I love them both, so I hated witnessing that.

First beer can opening...

The sound of the sun and wind breaking up the ice on the surface of the water.

I love all the sounds of nature, but the sound That gets my heart pounding is the sound line makes when its peeled off the reel and through the guides as a big fish makes a run. Braid has the sweetest sound.
