Hey guys, l want to pick up some wobble-head to try. I've seen three styles, two which seems really appealing.

 

You have your normal style with a hook attached.

 

You have a pretty normal style that has the wire loop oriented horizontally so you can use an o-ring between the head and the hook, allowing you to replace hooks.

 

Or there's the third style that just has the wobble-head itself with no hook but the ability to snap any hook in there. 

 

I would like to have my cake and eat it too if possible so I love the idea of being able to replace hooks. 

 

Do you guys have any recommendations?

Haven't used any that I could swap out hooks.

 

- Biffle Hard Head - best all around that Ive used

 

- Trokar Swing - nearly as good as Biffle

 

- Strike King - these tend to get hung more than two above 

 

-Z-Man finesse size - good for elaztech

 

If you want to change hooks, @A-Jay has recommended Freedom Tackle a number of times, though I have yet to try them

Some supplemental Swinghead info - I catch a lot of smallies doing this. 

 

 The two baits (heads) that address and satisfy my desires/needs are the RPE Tackle Tungsten Swinging Football Jig (No Hook) and the Freedom Tackle Stealth Swim Jig.

 The RPE rig is obviously Tungsten, come without a hook, can be purchased in bulk, and possesses a unique and very secure hook hanging system. I use the ½ & ¾ oz only here and do add an Owner Oval Split ring to the front line tie.  Big Fan. 

The Freedom Tackle product is offered & sold as a complete bait.  And while I do retain the hook & quality skirt that comes with the bait to use in different applications, for my swinghead fishing applications, I am just using the head.  And what a killer head it is !   Available in different weights, the ½ & ¾ oz are lead and the ¼ oz offering is plastic – all have a very stout hook hanger.  Haven’t had one fail yet. This head design fishes much different than the football head.  It’s much more of a swimming, almost gliding action across & along the bottom; rather than bouncing & digging into it like the tungsten head will do.  Superior for shallower & light weed areas.  HUGE Fan of this one ! Trailers are either a SK Rage Bug or a Reins Punching Predator.  I’ll add some color to them too.

I like the Biffle Hardhead and the Trokar Swing Head.  Paint on the Trokar sucks.  I'll use the Biffle before the Trokar but both are good.

Best one I’ve used by far is the Strike King Jointed Structure Head. It goes thru and around the rocks as well as any… but the slightly triangular head is just enough to nose thru weeds/cover without bringing back a clump of salad.

ooh, I haven't seen those yet.  I get a lot of black algae slime on some of my lakes which precludes a football shaped head a lot of the time.  This might be the trick.

I use a Jika these days, but have used the Z-man Texas EyeZ in the past. They make heavy duty and light wire versions. Eye is a really nice added bonus to this type of head IMO. And it's no small eye either. And deep colors that pop. And the bait keeper is a nice touch. I really like these, particularly the finesse version. The light wire hook is fantastic.

 

I've also used the Decoy SV-46. Very interesting and fun to fish. Enjoyed them so much I powder coated some. The keel works as you'd expect. More glide than something round or football.

 

And while I haven't used it, if I was picking a head now it would be this one. Decoy VJ-78 Switch c Bomb. The ability to allow your bait to backslide is awesome! Cast to the edge of weed bed or structure and allow it to backside in. I used this method with weightless plastics and was impressed. So no doubt I'd love to try these.

 

Barring that, the new Gamakatsu as suggested by Glenn

 

The Zappu Bow Head has been my favorite so far. 

What about a plain old Cheb rig?

To me, the Z-man is a good choice for swimming or dragging a bait in open water or very light cover.  That head shape is not a good option for working a bait through rip rap or chunk rock.

That, or just pegging your sinker 1" above the hook will give you the same effect.

The clip comes out so you can change out/use any hook you want.

I've had some of these sitting in the tackle archive about 5 or 6 years now and they've never been wet. Are you throwing these around Florida, and what trailer do you like with them?

Minnesota mostly, but some here in Florida. Caught a couple bigger smallies on gravel ledges in South Dakota too. Trailers include Rage Craw and Adrenaline Craw Jr.  I like the heavier 3/4 oz usually, sometimes half ounce.  I think it works everywhere ~

Right on, going try them out on some deeper sparse weed lines, hopefully the head shape will help them come through without plowing.
