Who likes to fish heavy cover?

Who likes to throw a frog way up into the bushes?

Who likes that screeching, squealing sound when you hook one under a mat?

Yes, I am a structure fisherman but the heaviest cover on structure is my whole deal.

Who agrees?!

I’ve said it before…

Nothing better than grabbing the big stick and going to work!!

Be it a 2ft thick mat of hydrilla or a 1/2 acre of floating hyacinth.

Down here for 3/4 of the year if you can read the signs and stay with it, any flip or pitch can be the biggest girl of your life.

All other presentations you chuck and wind, drop, drag, hop, shake or wack.
But if ya wanna take the big girls out sometimes ya gotta go where she lives and go get her on your own.

Mike

Everything down here is heavy cover. From marshes/swamps, Cypress lined bayous/rivers, lakes/reservoirs. Various types of vegetation, brush, & timber.

^ Which explains why @Catt is such an ornery cuss. 🙃

I swap off between finesse (Ned, Neko, DropShot, Shakey) and power (spinners, chatters, jigs, pitching). Mainly depends on what mood I'm in that day.

Course being shore-bound until this bloody ankle heals up, it's mainly finesse - got a couple low scorers (12"-14") today with a Ned when I got bored of catching sunnies and crappies with minnows.

I put the trolling motor down and go fishing . I'll   pitch   a texas rig in a brush pile with baitcasting gear on one cast and on the next  cast target rocks with a  spinning rod  and a ned rig. My largest bass this year has been on the ned.

Count me in. I don't mind cleaning my lure every cast.

I'm more of an isolated, edge of cover on structure kind of guy. The main reason is spots like those are hard to find and it's much easier for guys to target weed beds, rip rap and the like close to structure. I only target heavy cover under cold front conditions, then it hand to hand combat time if there's heavy stuff available.

Well admittedly, when I have located isolated cover, I will target this as well. It is sometimes difficult to fish this stuff without getting marked. Just the other day I was fishing an isolated patch of timber in deep water and someone took the time to circle me and mark the timber.

Yeah, that's me.  I carry 5 rods most of the time and sometimes 1 is a non-power technique when I leave the house (and sometimes not).  Depending on lake and time of year, I'll definitely have some combo of spinnerbait/chatterbait/swim jig/buzzbait/frog rigged.  Earlier season I will have two rods rigged with snaps for crankbaits and jerkbaits (they become impractical on most of my lakes from May onward).  I've just picked up bigger swimbaits.  My default is to keep moving.  Even when I throw a texas rig I'm moving it pretty quickly to cover water.  Only after I catch one will I slow down and work a location.  A couple places that I know bass to be consistently I will plan ahead and have something slower on, but that's not most of the time.

I'm from south Louisiana also. All I do is power fish. In fact, I don't own a spinning rod for bass fishing.

I've been known to leader my Medium powered egg beater with 12# fluorocarbon and sweep my rod and reel simultaneously to set a big dog 2/0 near trees growing on the bank.  Can't have them ripping drag and flopping up there to wrap me up.

I don't own any spinning gear.  I will on occasion throw a wacky cut down shaky head with my casting gear.  A cut down shaky head might look like a ned, but it ain't.

2 of my 3 biggest Bass of 2024 came right from the middle of lay downs.   If there's fishing pressure you've got to get a lure where others haven't.   My 2nd biggest of 2024 (6.61) came on a shaky head right behind 2 guys who had both ran buzz baits around the lay down.   I put the shaky head IN the lay down.   #STRAIGHTBIGGAMEBRIGADE   (with some luck every now and then)   B)   I get broke off every now and then, but it's usually after I know I should have re tied.

A couple weeks ago I caught my best of the year (7.91) on my 3rd cast of the day.  I lost a ~3 pounder on my first cast with a spinnerbait.  I followed up with a wacky and broke off on the hook set.   Then (finally) I re tied all my week old knots and sharpened the hook on my spinnerbait.   The next cast (my 3rd of the day) I drug the 7.91 pounder out between 2 dock posts ~18" apart.

I've got no choice, and I love it. I zone out and time just zips by when working the pads. So many possibilities.

Taken last week, and it'll only get thicker from here on out.

I have been known to paddle into pads in my kayak and drop a t rig in between them. Straight braid.  As little weight as possible

Oh yes indeed.  Pads?  Big laydowns?  Rocks?  Less that a foot of water?

Let's go!  That's my juice.

I like catching fish under any condition. Heavy cover is just another challenge to face during the day.

I get my cheap thrills catching big ones on 5lb line and a rod that I can use to pick my teeth with.
