On the way to go fishing yesterday  5 of my 9 fishing set ups blew out of my boat. Normally I put them in my truck bed for whatever reason I put them in the boat. Big mistake on my end. I lost roughly $1800 worth of gear. I only saw it when I got to the ramp. I ordered enough stuff yesterday to replace 3 of my set ups.
 

If there is any silver lining in this I am replacing two tranx 151 I lost with JDM shimano metaniun mgl 151xgb. I am going to keep the rods pretty much the same St. Croix premiers.  I have become very accustom to how they feel so I didn’t see the point in upgrading anything there. I also am replaced a spinning set up with what I had before Ultegra 2500 and a premier. Will I replace the others? At some point I am sure. For now this is what I am going with. 

OUCH... Lesson learned?

I strap my rods down on the deck with bungee cords.  I've never lost any while towing.  I have reached down to get one while fishing a couple times and it be gone.  This is while on the trolling motor without them strapped down.  

 

I keep losing throwable cushions and light weight jackets.  The rear compartment on my boat will blow open while towing if I forget to lock it.   I have a track record of forgetting once a year or so.  

@Ski yes sir. I normally put them in my truck bed. I can’t be mad at anyone but myself. The bait monkey is very pleased now though. 
 

@Woody B out of all the years I have fished this is the only stuff I have ever lost other than snags and a hat or two blowing off. I guess I paid for it big thsi time.   I told my wife I would have rather lost my cell phone than lose my gear. She looked at me like I was nuts. 

Did you back track on your way home looking for them?  I mean even if you found all or some of them, they might be damaged, but still useable.

 

Also, if you have insurance, you could submit a claim.  I have insurance on my gear up to a value of $5k.  It has a $500 deductible.

 

That is a hard lesson to learn.

Oh, no! I'm surprised wind could grab hold of a thin rod. 

@gimruis as far as back tracking I was on an interstate so I would have had to go that way again to find them. I cut my losses figuring nothing would be usable flying out at 65mph and possibly run over.

 

i do have insurance and it is covered. Then the insurance rate goes up and in the long run I would probably end up paying more.

We had a power surge in my home recently that cost me about two grand in lost electronics.

 

"File a claim," a friend said.

 

"Then they'll raise my insurance," I said. 

 

"Then what good is insurance?" she asked.

 

"It's very, very good if my home burns to the ground," I replied. 

Bummer.  I have lost a few over the years.  It hurts. It's not only the money loss but I have a personal attachment to most of my gear. I hope all goes well and you enjoy the new equipment. 

@ol'crickety exactly. $1800 is painful but can be replaced over time. That rate will almost never come down only go up year after year anyway.

And I agree on the phone.  A cloud backed up phone is easy to restore and replace.

 

But new rods are a lot more fun to restore and replace.  So at least enjoy the process.

Someone else posted about this not long ago too.  I think they said their setups were laid down in a bass boat but they forgot to strap them down.  They were in those rod socks or wraps or whatever though, which will grab the wind as you moving.

Socks would give wind more to grab.

I quit losing cushions when I began wrapping the strap around the shifter handle.  Losing rods kicking them overboard isn't hard.  Sorry for your losses but enjoy the new stuff.

Man....I'd be crying for months.  Sorry about your loss.

Thank you for sending this. I have a ridiculous amount worth of gear sitting on my deck and find myself being lazy moving from spot to spot on my all sports lake. One wrong race from a wake boat could send them all over. I’ll will change my habits 

On our last trip to Okeechobee, we were going to run up lake from the south end and rather than getting in the rim canal we decided to take the shorter route straight up the lake.  It was rough and I was in my partners boat with my rods strapped flat on the rear deck with the butts to the rear and the tips along the gunnel pas me.  We use 2 mounted bungee straps to hold them in.  For some reason the front one let loose and I realized gear was taking flight when a rod hit me in the side of the face on its way out.  I lost 5 combos and would have lost more except for a rattletrap that snagged the line of a couple on the way out.  You can see how they are stored in the pic.  Never have had any escape before or since.  

That’s wild, maybe some line started coming off the spool and yanked one out? I lt never ceases to amaze me what stays in my boat while trailering, I’ve driven 6 hours to find a plastic worm unmoved 

Two of the three rods were delivered today.  Got home packaged busted none were in the tube. I’m not suppose to fish anymore. 

They delivered an empty tube? 😂

Well that's interesting.  They either slid out during shipment or someone stole them I assume?

 

My advice would be to go visit a retail brick and mortar store instead.  That way you can pick up, hold, and handle each rod in person and ensure they make it home in one piece.

@fin yup you can see the FedEx driving carrying the empty tube on my security camera. End busted open nothing in it. 
 

@gimruis I am going to be picking the rods up this time. 

I'd hammer both Fed-EX and who you purchased them from. And still go buy another couple of rods just to show'em!
