Should I be using Polarized sunglasses whilst fishing?

Featured Replies

I ve heard that polarized lenses will help me whilst fishing as apparently you can see under the water (and see the fish!). What do you think or are normal sunglasses just as good?

Buy a pair of polarized glasses at Walmart for around 20 bucks, they are in the fishing section. You’ll see the difference, then you can expand from there. They might suit you fine, or go and buy expensive pair.

Polarized sunglasses aren’t the end all be all to eliminate all glare on the water but it does help a ton. My wife doesn’t wear them and there have been plenty of times we’re fishing and I’m seeing bass swimming around and I tell her there’s a big bass here or there and she can’t see them. “How can you not see that bass right there?” I always say, then I remember she doesn’t have polarized sunglasses. I just use a cheap $25 pair of Kastking sunglasses and have been happy with them over the years.

Thou shouldest.

If you fish water more towards the clear end of the spectrum, polarized glasses can open up a whole new underwater world for the wearer. Especially during the spring time when a lot of fish are up in shallow water. I highly recommend polarized glasses, especially if you fish from a boat.

I fish from a canoe and think I’m too low to see in the water even with polarized glasses although at times I can see them to some extent. For me they cut the glare, that’s enough. I use wrap around style so all glare is cut.

They wont give you super powers but the cut all the sun glare off the water and make it easier to see.

I wear them all the time but I make sure they are ANSI rated. I've had too many close calls with a jig or Trig flying past my head to want to risk an eye ball.

It's just analog shallow live scope from before we had electronics.  Osprey Vision ™

You're spotlighting fish if you wear them. 😂😂😂😂😏😏😏😏

I'll turnaround and go back and get them if I forget them.......100% must have item.

Beyond the incredible benefits to actual fishing, it's important to protect your eyes.   I believe we should always where eye protections when fishing.....both from flying objects like lures, and from harmful sun rays hurting our eyes.

Yes you need eye protection when fishing!

Polarized dark gray for bright day light and dark amber for overcast lower light conditions allow you to see through light glare into the water.

Protect yourself from over exposure to sunlight both skin and eyes.

This. This. This.

1) won’t fish without mine for any reason whatsoever

2) protection as stated above

3) I look cool in sunglasses

I wear costas and have been for about 15 yrs now. They give a pretty hefty discount to industry experts (much different than “influencers”). I have not paid full price for costas for a very long time.

That said, if you have a local REI, Academy or other such places, look into either Goodr or Knockaround sunglasses. They are $25-$35 a pair and are excellent glasses for the money. Polarized. I have a few pair kicking around the truck. I have a pair in my umpire bag in case I forget my costas (they are prescription). I have a pair in my blackpack pro on my kayak. I have a pair in my glove compartment of my truck. They have all kinda of crazy, cool color combinations, frame styles, etc…they are truly a fashion statement thing and since they are cheaper, I don’t feel bad buying a couple of different pair indifferent styles for whatever…

I wear them for eye protection more than for seeing under water.  One downside not mentioned is they limit the angle you can view your electronics from.

You should absolutely use polarized glasses. I wear prescription glasses and have a polarized set. #1 it's much better for your eye health, #2 makes it safer driving around with the glare and so on cut down. #3 they protect you from catching a lure or lake debris getting in your eyes if something happens.#4 increased underwater visibility. Personally mine have a green/black lenses tint color and I really like it over any other colors I've tried but some of it is preference same as selecting color palates on a graph.

Sonar screen protector like NuShield solves that problem.

I have been using Costas for about 30 years, but you don’t need the spend that much.  Get a comfortable pair from Walmart and go exploring.  The 20 dollar brands will certainly change the game for you!

For those of you who are like me and wear glasses and don’t want to invest in prescription sunglasses, I recommend Cocoons fit over sunglasses.

A lot of fit over sunglasses look like ski goggles, but not these. You need to measure the width and height of your eyeglasses, then select the appropriate sized fit over.

In my threeish years of fishing for lmb in Maine, I have never seen a single spawning bed or swimming bass. Like you, I think a canoe is just too low.

I picked up some Kastkings via Amazon...

One pair for low light conditions, one pair for brigh-sunny conditions. I wear them all the time when fishing.

Yes, polarized gives you advantage when looking for fish...but my main reason is eye protection. I don't want to catch a hook in the eye. Ouch!

It would be very difficult for me to fish without them now.  I would feel like I'm at a disadvantage.

In my opinion, Polarized make it a little easier to see into the water. I've been watching the bass in a local pond with a set on. Great for the spawn!
