14 year old new to fishing!

Featured Replies

Hey everyone!

I'm excited to join this forum and talk fishing with all of you. My name is Evan, and my love for fishing started with my grandpa up in Green River, Wyoming. He's been a lifelong fisherman and even used to fish professionally. So from when I was little he had me out in the water at Flaming Gorge chasing Kokanee salmon. These trips got me hooked into this amazing hobby.

This past summer, my grandpa took me up in Alaska, which was one of the best moments of my life. We went after halibut, rockfish, and salmon, and I got to see how fun fishing can be up there. It really expanded my love for fishing!

I live in Parker Colorado where I spend lots of time at Chatfield Reservoir chasing walleye, trout, and small mouth bass. I'm always trying new setups, and learning how to fish and rig in my kayak.

Kayak fishing has always been my passion and since I am 14 that is a great way for me to get out on the water. I am always finding ways to rig up my Kayak for my needs. I even plan later this year to put a trolling motor on my kayak! I also want to start getting into lure making. This includes modeling my own lures and custom painting hard baits.

I am really glad to be part of this community and hope to learn from other anglers who share the same passion as me. Whether it's taking kayak rigs, tackle setups, tackle making, or fishing stories. I'm always excited to share ideas and experiences.

Tight lines,

Evan Mancini

Hey, Evan! You write well and I assert this as a former writing teacher and professional writer. It's cool that you've caught so many species already and are exploring various facets of fishing. The guys at Bass Resource are always helpful...and they know a lot. One guy here has caught multiple bass between 17 and 19+ pounds. Crazy, huh?!? Can you share a few pics of your fish?

Welcome to BR, Evan!

Fishing is a sport and activity you can do at almost any age. And the longer you stick with it, the better you get. And at your age (trust me on this as I was 14 once, a long time ago), it’s a great excuse for why you need to get up early and not get in trouble late at night lol.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the warm welcome. @Swamp Girl I'm actually out traveling right now, but I plan to add some pictures once I get home this Saturday.

Welcome to BR Evan! Like @Swamp Girl I was immediately impressed with your language skills while reading your post. AND you are catching smallmouth and walleyes - my two favorites…

Welcome aboard.

Grandpa's lessons will remain with you forever

Welcome aboard. I sure I started when I was your age. I hope you have many opportunities to fish with your grandpa. They would be memories for a lifetime to cherish. 😎👍

Ran by your thread again, and I thought I'd share this in case you didn't know.

I've caught my last two PB bass on crankbaits so modified, a 4lb7oz and 4lb11oz.

@Bazoo great info. Looking forward to delving into this. I love cranks but the past 2-3 years most bass caught in other techniques and I like cranking. Matter of fact, only 2-3 on cranks this year and decent 4+ pounders. This tweak just might be the edge I need against them.

@islandbass It's an awesome change. I run both standard and tied crankbaits. It'll make a non rattling bait completely silent. One of my favorites is a Shad Rap, which is what I have my current PB on.

One of the awesome things about it is when other anglers see you, they don't see you doing anything different. Nice thing if you bank fish. Course, most of those folks wouldn't fool with it anyway.

  • Super User

@Bazoo my favorite were the DT6s and floaters. I never got into the shad raps but now I will thanks to you.
