They keep telling me it's going to end eventually. But I'm really concerned that my Qualude stash might not last that long. 🥴 A-Jay

  • Have to admit that I do enjoy seeing posts from folks who are sharing in a full-on winter experience. And not the kind that 'melts' by lunchtime. I will be sure to remind you of this again when you po

  • We've had a bit of a warm up and it's been raining on & off since early this morning. Best part is my shoveling efforts seemed to useful. Half my roof is bare and exposed. More snow is on the way

There are other ways to accomplish that too.

I'm all for it. It's incredible how bad those nasty little deer ticks have gotten. I hardly mushroom hunt anymore because of them.

It was -10 when I started work at 4am. Company policy says I'm not allowed in the cab of the truck while I'm loading, which takes about an hour. I decided to ignore company policy.

I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday. Fargen deer ticks are HORRIBLE around here anymore. Hopefully this snow pack and long bitter cold stretch thins 'em out.

I hadn't thought about ticks, but you're right. Fewer ticks will survive the winter. New England leads the nation in Lyme's cases.

16’ of snow in Houghton. That’s impressive and unfathomable actually.

Yeah but houghton is amazing. Maybe not right now but in July 😂

We had our first rain in 2 weeks today. Mid-40's for temps. It's supposed to hit 60 this weekend and all next week. It's extremely unusual weather here. Typically it's raining and in the low 40's at best, usually snowing, really. This is the first winter in over 10 years where we haven't had prolonged freezing temps.

After all that flooding, you guys deserve some dry weather

  • BassResource.com Administrator

True, but they're crying wolf (again) that we're going to have a drought due to low snowpack in the mountains. LOL!

I swear they dig up that same story every year about this time. It's like clockwork. Then the spring rains and more flooding come. It's what I call "The news making up news"

We haven't had a true drought since the mid-70's.

We have about an inch on the ground and are supposed to get 5-8”. Nothing for you guys more north but it’s the most we’ve had in a decade.

The west as a whole is experiencing a very mild, dry winter. The PNW is obviously in better shape but if this pace continues, there are going to be water shortages and cutbacks as the year progresses. Snow pack in the Rockies is alarmingly low.

I would much rather have a surplus of water than a drought.

Later today I'll be braving the subzero wind chills to get up on my roof.

Need to access what I have ahead of me as far as clearing it off.

As well as dig out 4 vent pipes that are coming close to getting buried.

Had to clear the vent pipes last February.

Finding them is often a little tricky.

Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday next week look like the first reasonable shots weatherwise to get it done.

It would be great to complete it in one day, but my working pace is not what it used to be.

So it might take a couple anyway.

Let's see if the kids still got it.

This is easily the most physically & mentally demanding activity I ever do.

Today (Sunday) was better weather-wise, so I started the process.

Still single-digit cold but the wind was down mostly.

3.5 hrs in—and I was toast.

Got about halfway through it.

Expecting to finish tomorrow.

Lived here over 5 years and never seen ice on my lake/river. The coves are "solid" with no water peeking through. Very pretty and zero traffic for my commute in though. In NC fashion this will semi melt and freeze solid on and off for at least a few more days.

It's been about 15 years since we've had such a warm winter. It's going to be mid-60's and sunny this week. I'm going to have to mow the lawn....the 3rd time since Thanksgiving.

We got 11” of snow this past weekend. I know that’s ’a dusting’ for most of you but in Charlotte that’s a lot! Broke my favorite shovel…😢 RIP Poly Scoop…Ypu scooped many things over a decade and a half of service…

Some modeling is showing a crack at 60 degrees in parts of southwest MN next week.

Not 40, not 50. SIXTY degrees. Oh my.

@gim - what website is that for those models? That looks pretty cool.

We do not have the same forecast. At least a little bit of sun plus partly cloudy (as opposed to cloudy) plus 34-36 degrees for a couple minutes will help clear up the edges of the snow a bit and some of the road intersections that are sloppy.

@Functional , I saw a river that feeds into the TN river frozen over this morning. It was open water by afternoon on my way home but almost every single creek arm of the reservoir is frozen

The OH up my way is frozen solid. No barges are moving and the locks can't operate. All the crude we're currently hauling is going into the pipeline or into rail cars. Temps are finally starting to moderate to our seasonal norms though with lows at least a little above zero and highs in the 20's and 30's forecast. Gonna be awhile before we see a thaw out, but hopefully we keep trending in that direction.

With this going on for a few weeks now,

Another couple inches last night and today, and the frigid temps continue. Getting down to negative double digits tonight and tomorrow. Absolutely brutal winter, coldest I can remember in a long time. It’s completely killed the industry I work in too, resulting in some cut hours for February.

  • Super User

I think we’re actually colder than A-Jay for once. Our wind chill forecast for tonight and tomorrow is -21 to -23. We are sitting on a real 3 outside and dropping a few more tonight with 20-25mph solid winds. It’s just stupidly cold.

On top of it being stupidly cold, people are being stupid in the cold. Trees are falling all over the place blocking roads. Snow is drifting across roads and making slippy spots (and that’s going to get really bad tonight). People are doing stupid stuff on the road anyway and there are more accidents happening now than when we had 4” of snow on the road. And to top it off, someone broke our mirror in the Costco parking lot and walked off. No note. We have her on video doing it and I have her plate. I left her a note with my number and to get in touch. I’ll be calling the insurance on Monday with her info.

  • Super User

@casts_by_fly how did you get it on video at costco? Dashcam?
