And, YES, it's still winter up here, to keep on this thread's trajectory...

I am firmly in the denial stage on that roof deal.

That roof made me think of grumpy old men. 😂 It's starting to feel like your neck of the woods in mine. My yard looks nearly like yours. My work week starts tomorrow. Temps will range from -13 to 14 all week. Brrr...

Look at the bird feeders. That's yesterday's snowfall. I fired up the snowblower three times in 24 hours:

The single biggest snowfall I experienced in Maine was 31 inches, but that snowfall was beaten by the winter it didn't stop snowing. Nearly everyday, it snowed two to three inches. I hired men to clear the roof a couple times, but ice dams formed. I'd climb my ladder everyday to fight them, but I lost that battle and our roof leaked in six places. The ceiling repairs and light fixture replacements made for an expensive winter.

I've lived through 2 and 3 foot snowfalls in places that are used to it and equipped to handle it, no problem. Here in NC, we just got some sleet and mixed precip that have turned into a couple inches of solid ice on most of the (non-main) roads. Difficult for most folks to get out of their homes last several days.

Later today I'll be braving the subzero wind chills to get up on my roof.

Need to access what I have ahead of me as far as clearing it off.

As well as dig out 4 vent pipes that are coming close to getting buried.

Had to clear the vent pipes last February.

Finding them is often a little tricky.

Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday next week look like the first reasonable shots weatherwise to get it done.

It would be great to complete it in one day, but my working pace is not what it used to be.

So it might take a couple anyway.

Let's see if the kids still got it.

This is easily the most physically & mentally demanding activity I ever do.

It's the worst. The snow is so heavy and the task is so dangerous. I'm glad you're not going to do it in a day. When I'm tired, I become stupid and take chances I don't take when I have energy. So, stretch out the work and stay safe because those Menderchuck bass are waiting for you.

When I was young, Miami got an inch of snowfall. TV stations showed videos of cars sliding into intersections. You're right about snowfall being relative.

I shoveled during the storm and after the storm then we got 2 inches of snow and 2 inches of ice. With sub zero temps it turned to solid un shovelable ice pack. Like a fool, I pushed some of the snow up to the side, back and front of my truck rather than all the way off the driveway and it turned into an ice prison. I don’t want to get out the metal spade to bust through the ice and damage the asphalt seal I just had applied this summer. Then the plow comes and pushes a 2 foot mound of snow across the end of my driveway and of course it’s right before the 2 inches of ice fell. Put the truck in 4wd and busted out but even the truck wasn’t heavy enough to break the ice on the driveway. I’m heading out to my daughters farm to get the boat tomorrow and head to Florida. Of course they are in a severe cold snap with 30mph predicted wind gusts. And another east coast storm predicted for this weekend. I can’t win. I’m going anyway. Time for some combat fishing.

Well, that denial deal is a thing of the past, as short-lived as it was.

Went up to clear the roof vents and to assess what I had ahead of me for next week.

Vents cleared out no problem, and a couple were pretty close to being buried.

As for the rest of it, not pretty.

I better eat my Wheaties . . . .

I don’t know how you northern guys deal with it. Knowing that the snow that just fell in November is still going to be there in March when the sun finally comes back out. We are a month in to basically all sub freezing temps and have another 2 weeks minimum to go, maybe more. There is 18” inches of snow that is starting to crust on top, but not enough for the dogs to walk on or me to clean up dog poop on. And there is no relief in sight. Nothing I can do about it. Keep the driveway and walking way clean. Hope for a warm up to come that isn’t in the 10 day forecast. And that’s only ~2 months of this. You guys have 2-3x that. I don’t think I could do it.

We're all different.

Living in northern Michigan might not be for everyone.

For us, we 'deal' with winter the same way we 'deal' with spring, summer, and fall, just with fewer layers.

Residing in a place that has 4 full seasons, we find that life develops a 'rhythm.'

Each season brings changes and challenges.

It's far more gratifying when we are ready, willing & able to manage whatever they bring.

Mentally, physically, emotionally & spiritually.

There is definitely a time when we appreciate plenty days of each season

and a few that are not exactly our favorites.

But there is no doubt in my mind that in the summertime, living is easy.

Hang in there.

@A-Jay how much snow do you have on the ground? I asked my friend today who lives in TC and he said he didn’t really know, he just knew it was a ton.

He’s still young so he doesn’t pay attention to things like this I guess. 😁

Here we have around 12”. GR and towards the lake they’re 18-24”.

From what I’m seeing, we’re at 56.4” for the season so far.

Looks like we have like a 15 inch base left on the ground,

but we're getting some snow every day.

Sort of surprising considering how cold it's been.

Local NWS says we've gotten 95 inches so far.

Either way, if I'm on the roof at any point,

we've got a lot of snow.

Stay Safe

Waking up to a crispy −22°.This morning. Without the wind chill.

If you've never experienced the wonder of that kind of a deal, you're not really missing out on anything.

It's the kind of cold , it burns your lungs.

Stay frosty my friends.

16’ of snow in Houghton. That’s impressive and unfathomable actually.

I actually cannot remember the last time it was above freezing here.

The good news is that every single tick should be stone dead by now.

We had our first rain in 2 weeks today. Mid-40's for temps. It's supposed to hit 60 this weekend and all next week. It's extremely unusual weather here. Typically it's raining and in the low 40's at best, usually snowing, really. This is the first winter in over 10 years where we haven't had prolonged freezing temps.

I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday. Fargen deer ticks are HORRIBLE around here anymore. Hopefully this snow pack and long bitter cold stretch thins 'em out.

There are other ways to accomplish that too.

@gim I was thinking the same thing. As a tick magnet, I’m hoping this brutally cold winter means a lesser tick season.
