I will keep this brief.

We are getting Hammered

Big snow, big wind, wicked cold / wind chills and crazy ice.

I will be hiding in the basement hoping we can somehow

mange to keep power.
Probably be several days before we get a break.
Good Times.

About 5 inches of wind-driven powdery snow here last night.  It started off as light rain in the morning and that froze like super glue.  Temp dropped to single digits now.

Not good times.

Roads are decent though - already did a Menards trip this morning.

1” of rain yesterday then the temps tanked, winds are howling to the tune of 40mph gusts, and so far only 1.5” of snow. We’re only supposed to get a total of 3-6” through Wednesday but the wind will make it seem like way more. They’re calling for 25-30’ waves on Lake Michigan which would be a sight to see. Already had one small tree come down behind our house.

The next 24 hours will be interesting.

60 degrees and thunderstorms at midnight. 27 and snowing sideways now. Blowing 25-35 with occasional gusts near 50. The 30 day forecast looks like real January in OH. Mostly highs in the 20's and 30's.

I missed my opportunity to get one last muskie trip in yesterday. 50's with light showers and light winds, but I'm battling a nasty head and chest cootie. Decided being out in the cool damp air might not be the best idea. Getting soft in my old age. 😂

The 30 day forecast

I wouldn't trust that more than about 3 days out.

Any idea how big of waves you’ve been in?

Big waves are always relative to the size of the boat, ship or cutter I'm on.  The smaller the boat , cutter, or ship I am running, the bigger the waves look.

30 foot waves, a 100 miles out in the north Atlantic in December in an 82 foot cutter,

look really big.

Well the blizzard like conditions have continued through the day and expected to go for at least half the night. Looks like we’ll be waking up to quite the winter wonderland.  I’m hoping I get started with the clean up tomorrow, but if it continues into Tuesday & Wednesday as forecasted, I may just wait.  Got some drifts over 4 feet and plenty of snow and ice hanging on trees and power lines.  So far we’re still getting juice but that could be short lived.

Earning me some fat smallness right now . . . Stay Safe.

I bet you have a backup whole house generator and a large propane tank.

Propane yes - Generator no.

I've been holding off as long as I can.

But we have been without power "Many" times.

And while it always sux a little, wood stove and a cord or so on stand by inside the garage,

always gets us by for heat.

The propane stove takes care of the cooking.

Burying food & frozen goods in the snow keeps them for a while.

Biggest challenge is no well pump.

Stored H2O never lasts as long as we'd like.

Especially using it to perform septic duties.

Now switch the no power to summer, and things get a little dicey.

Having heat is key. I'm assuming you have a 12 volt deep cycle battery, you can get an inverter for like $150 and run a couple of power cords to your fridge and some other smaller items - Internet, tv and lamp or whatever and run them off the deep cycle battery. I think you get 24 hours of constant use. Way more if you're not binge watching anything.

Mine is Jupiter 2000 watt inverter and it looks like they go for $189

If I need heat - my refrigerator is the great outdoors.

Here's this mornings updated northern Michigan snowfall totals so far ~

May be an image of ski slope and text that says 'STORM TEAM 8 MICHIGAN SNOWFALL ROUNDUP SNOW MARQUETTE AVG 102.8" SAULT STE. 80.4 inches here seems about right.

Got another 8-12 inches overnight.

Skipping my scheduled training to clear it away.

It's a perfect 20 degrees with light winds,

so at least I'll be comfortable.

For you northern climate guys, once it starts snowing and you get that first big one, does it ever clear or are you stuck with snow/ice/hardpack until spring?  We got 8” or so before Christmas and while the sidewalks are clear the lawn/woods/etc are all white hardpack.  It’s annoying for the dogs because they just lose grip (especially in the next phase when it just ices).  But we have 50 a rainy for 2 days this weekend so it will be gone by Monday.  I can’t imagine aging to deal with it for 4 months straight.
