They keep telling me it's going to end eventually. But I'm really concerned that my Qualude stash might not last that long. 🥴 A-Jay

  • Have to admit that I do enjoy seeing posts from folks who are sharing in a full-on winter experience. And not the kind that 'melts' by lunchtime. I will be sure to remind you of this again when you po

There are signs of seasonal changes that when you see them you just know what they mean.  The first snowfall in November doesn’t mean a whole lot for me other than cold damp air coming from the north.  This morning though, I noticed that every roadside puddle was frozen, some frozen solid.  That’s a big cue that the ground has lost its heat.  It isn’t long after that when the lakes start to get skim ice at night.  Our 2-week forecast is 50/30 with some sun so that should delay things a little but water temps are going to be dropping a few more degrees imminently.

@casts_by_fly, it’s slightly different in my region. The signs you look for are all from humans. Complaining, sheer panic, excessive purchasing of rapidly perishable food items, and extremely excessive salting of roads that turns perfectly good highway into a corrosive mess about the consistency of a gravel road

Panic buying!  Gather up a bunker of toilet paper while you can!

I've been on a baked beans kick lately, so if you got extra you want to unload (no pun intended), I'll PM my address ... :fart:

@TnRiver46 - that’s the next step I think.  I doubt many here even noticed the icy puddles today.  But that’s the first step for the next storm to make it bad.  4” of snow on warm ground is just a mud bath, but otherwise harmless.  2” of snow on freshly frozen asphalt before people have gotten their winter driving practice is just a mess.

There’s actually a slight chance of rain/snow mix here tonight into tomorrow morning. It may miss me, but a little further south might see some minor accumulation.

Its been very dry here lately. When I mulched leaves, they turned to dust.

I just saw a guy mowing in shorts

granted he appears to have planted the cool season stuff and waters the crap out of it, everyone else’s yard has been dormant for weeks. There are always a few people that maintain a lush green yard all winter long with tons of watering

Mine stays green until it is covered by white.  Or torn up by the dogs into mud.  A good fall feeding program and some October rain will sort that right out.  Irrigation works instead if you have it.

I'm hoping for snow. We're in extreme drought.

Temp-wise, everyday here is pretty much the same day with a low of 28 and a high of 41. That's what coastal living is like: each day is like the prior day and the next day.

If you want extreme weather shifts, live in Iowa or Minnesota where one day can have a high of 70 and the next day, a high of 40. That doesn't happen here.

We got our first snow overnight.  As predicted from my prior post, this one actually stuck a little to the ground and didn't instantly melt since the ground is getting cold now.  And as predicted, traffic into work today was 10 minutes more than it needed to be.  No accidents, just people being dumb.

Finally put all the gear away for the season. Gotten several dustings of snow so far and windshields need scraping every morning. Been a typical November so far. I am hoping the trend of getting the majority of our snowfall in March continues.

Worst part about the weather has been the wind. It’s been ripping 25mph+ every day and makes any kind of outside work difficult and very unpleasant.

  • Super User

@Jar11591 that was our wind for the past two weeks.  Finally getting back to okay here.  Tomorrow looks particularly wonderful.  I'm hoping to get out since it will be my last chance for two weeks.

We have that roller coaster all the time. Had a day last week with frost in the morning and 70 plus in the afternoon . I can remember several times when it was even more drastic

our first snow was a day or three after Halloween

There is a winter storm warning in portions of northern Minnesota tomorrow into Wednesday.  4-8 inches of snow and 40 mph winds.

I am south of this, and most of what appears to be coming at my location is rain, with a slight chance of rain/snow mix on Tuesday night.

This is very beneficial moisture for the landscape here.  It's been extremely dry lately.

The 7-10 day forecast is showing below average temperatures so whatever snow falls will be sticking around for a while.

@gim ~

Looks like we're getting our first look at some significant snow

at the end of the week as well.

WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING... Heavy snow and blowing snow likely. Total snow accumulation amounts of 10 inches or more possible. Lesser amounts expected along the immediate lakeshore. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph.

We're ready.

I am not a fan of cold rain.

Unless, of course, it's melting early-season ice ice baby.

Supposed to be in the low 30s/upper 20s later this week. I may go drag for some whisker fish… Cold for Charlotte.

I ran my snowblower last weekend when I "winterized" my lawn mower.  A couple of my neighbors gave me a strange look when they saw that snow blower running.

Received about 1-2 inches of snow last night.  It's caked to everything like super glue because it started off as rain.

I heard areas near Duluth received about 9 inches.

  • Global Moderator

We were projected to get around 1” in my area and 4” closer to the lake. We ended up with 4” at my house. Like @gim, it started off a rain, then freezing crap, and finally snow so everything is plastered to all structures like superglue.

The wind was really howling. It’s not too bad this morning but is supposed to pick back up as the day progresses. Saturday, we’re supposed to get another snow event.

It’s here whether we want it or not.
