Best Hooks?

Featured Replies

I think your hook is one of the most important parts of a fishing setup. If you're using an inferior/ dull hook, it can cost you fish. I prefer Owner and Gamakatsu hooks. From the hooks that I have tried, these seem to be the sharpest and stay sharp, most of the time. What do you fellas think are the best hooks?

I use Trokar hooks for all presentations except for when rigging paddle tail swim baits.

For those I use 5/0 Gamakatsu with cps.

Those Trokar hooks do look razor sharp

Agreed. I think bkk, decoy, and ryugi hang right there with them and I've been happy with my limited recent exposure to mustad, trokar, vmc, and berkley fusion. Overall I think hook tech has drastically improved the last 5-7 years.

There are a lot of good hooks out there. For me, I am not exactly brand loyal so I am all over the place when it comes which ones I use. I like Ryugi, Gamakatsu, Owner, Hayabusa, Zappu, BKK, Decoy and maybe Trokar. I also like Mustad's flipping hooks but have not been a fan of much else from them.

My go to worm hook now is the Ryugi Infini. I had been ordering them from Japan and for the price, you can't beat them. They also make one of the most incredible little hooks out there, the Hobbit. I have brought in some big bass on these hooks and have yet to have one bend out. Just an amazing piece of tackle engineering.

Never heard of Ryugi, will have to check them out

Looking at the Ryugi's, I like how the point extends beyond the eye on the EWG's. I dont use EWG's because the hook point lines up with the eye

As with a lot of things bass fishing, there are times when the infinite choices can be a detriment to actually catching more fish. Spending time worrying about the differences in two things or what else is out there can just be a distraction. If you like to try new things and want to experiment then go for it. For me and hook selection, gamakatsu offers just about everything you could want in a top of the line hook. So I keep it simple and go with a proven solution. The only two exceptions that I use with any regularity are the VMC weedless neko hook and the owner swimbait hooks whether the lite or the beast.

I totally agree, the infinite choices is absolutely a detriment, and one should fish how they like to fish and have fun. I'm trying to simplify my offerings to how I like to fish and still catch fish, on a consistent basis

Gamakatsu, Owner, and VMC have everything I've needed so far.

Probably my favorite tackle brand, though I use something from everyone.

The Infini hook is superb as is the Hobbit. Virtually every hook I've used from them have been very high quality.

All Gamakatsu, all the time.

Gamakatsu Nano Alpha is my preferred hook for most of my T-rigging. I also mix in some Owner Cover Shot hooks for thinner plastics and dropshots. I have a few packs of Ichikawa weedless wacky hooks and they're the most insanly sharp hooks I've ever felt.

I’ve been using Gamakatsu for almost 20 years now with zero issues.

I’ve tried Trokar and thought they were too sharp and created too big of a hole in the fishes mouth.

I was going to mention that about the Trokar's, Ive heard others say this about the triangular point vs conical

I had issues with both Trokar and Owner cutting point hooks slicing big holes in their mouths, and also cutting up the plastics faster. I tried some Trokar jig hooks on my bladed jigs and the points rolled and dulled really bad. Turned me off to them pretty quickly.

Trokar has always gotten negative responses on here

which is one of the reasons I always hesitate to even bring them up.

They do what they’re designed to do…cut through the hardest part of a fishes mouth quickly especially when leverage is lost as in punching through heavy weeds which is my preferred way to fish.

They require less setting pressure to get maximum penetration.

In fairness they have never let me down and gives me one less thing to be concerned about when landing.

Mike

I use two brands of hooks. Owner and spearpoint. I know alot of people think spearpoints is a bit gimmicky but I will swear by the Spearpoint finesse hooks. Owner's cutting point hooks are my favorite worm hooks. I have landed more fish on an owner hook with a fluke on it that probably all my baits put together. They stick em good.

Good Fishing

This is what Im talking about with the ewg's, how the point extends past the eye and doesnt line up with it. Most ewg's are like kahle hooks, and I think that can cause missed hook sets. But I know a lot of people swear by them. I'll have to give these a try

Gamakatsu, Owner, and Ryugi for me. I despise Trokar hooks, or any cutting point hook for that matter. The tips roll and they do exactly what they are designed to....cut. I had a few of the war eagle spinnerbaits with them and they would constantly slice large holes in the side of the fish's mouth so when they went to shake there wasn't much meat holding on to anything anymore.

But most of my worm hooks are Gamakatsu, trebles are usually Owner. I do like the Gamakatsu Nano Finesse and Ryugi Pierce small trebles for jerkbait fishing and finesse baits like tailspins, blade baits etc.

Gama all the way

Depends on the application.

But mostly Gamakatsu or VMC

I use Gamakatsu for all my EWG and flipping hook needs.

For circle hooks, drop shot, and Neko hooks I use all VMC/VMC redline. I started experimenting with the redline hooks last season.I have not made up my mind if they are worth it.

I really like gamakatsu/trokar/owner/mustad any of the nice coated hooks with sharp tips out there. It’s really more about matching the hook size and style to the application and if you do that right , they’re all pretty fantastic now days. Everyone else’s mileage may vary - but that’s my 2 cents having used most of the top rated bass fishing hooks and cheap crap - it’s all pretty much fine if it’s sharp.

I learned to use a hook sharpener and any hook I use is gonna be sharp and that’s been a huge deal for me!
