You are never expected to break off. While not required, it's just common courtesy and good sportsmanship for the boater to give you an opportunity to unsnag your lure and vice versa. Any angler, front or back seat, tournament or not, that doesn't do that is just a jerk and gives the sport a black eye.

@bulldog1935 is on target. Manually flip the bail and get some tension before reeling. In addition, the spool likely has too much line on it. Peel off 10-20 yards and cut it off. The manual technique is show in detail here:

I saw this at ICAST. I was underwhelmed. The more I talked to them and the more questions I asked, the more buggy and inaccurate it became. Seems there was always a caveat at every corner.
