Fishtechy - Cool fishing gizmo

I used it here on a smallie, but it's supposed to work on any species.

They send you a little orange ball - you download the app - take photo of fish, it measures the fish, estimates the girth and weight.

No fumbling around with a bump board, or a tape measure.

Time out of the water is seconds, total.

I had to edit this, …..to add content… I wonder if they will adapt this for tournaments.

It would be pretty interesting to do a little experiment and measure and weigh the next few you catch to see how close the app is.

The fish profile doesn’t factor in girth. Without girth the formula can only use an average for girth  example 75% of the length, not accurate enough to replace a scale.

Tom

Girth 13.01". ?

without actually measuring

Does the orange ball serve as a reference and must be included in photo?  Or does it have another purpose?

It is used as a standard to establish size. The ball is clipped to the jaw and hangs straight down.

Tom

Pretty cool idea, not sure I want a stupid orange ball in all of my pictures though. :)

I'll double check a couple...as long as it's close it's more than good enough for me.

As I noted, I don't care about fish weight at all - I haven't weighed a fish in at least 11 years - my scale has never been in the boat I own now.

I don't need to know fish weight enough to hang a fish vertically by it's jaw, particularly bigger fish - not good for them.

Close enough for me.

It's a reference - it's a known constant regardless of the distance from the camera lens.

I saw this at ICAST.  I was underwhelmed.  The more I talked to them and the more questions I asked, the more buggy and inaccurate it became.  Seems there was always a caveat at every corner.

Better to just hold the ball on a finger, I think.

If I want a picture without the ball, I can make it disappear in 30 seconds.

I guess it depends on how accurate you want/need it to be.

It's more than close enough for what I want.

I see it’s $25.00….. is that annual fee or one time.

The app is free, it's the purchase of the proof ball that the $25 covers.

Yes, I’d really like to see this. Very cool if it’s accurate!

Looks pretty accurate for the one you are holding

also if your scale is like any I’ve had and you haven’t used it in 11 yrs, it probably doesn’t work anymore 😂

You don’t have to hang a fish vertically to weigh it, just put it in a bag and tare

What was the actual weight?

Yeah, I liked it until Glenn said that he found it wonky and for whatever reasons, as time passes, I care less what my fish weigh. They're big to me. They fight so hard they've nearly yanked my rods from my grips more than once. They're glorious and I'm grateful to spend a little time with them.

I have no idea where the scale is...it may be in the landfill...

...but it didn't have tare function....and I don't have a bag.

I do appreciate the info though, it's good for people who care what a fish weighs.

I'm really only interested in length; I haven't weighed a fish in years...and I don't think Glenn actually tried one...

Thanks.  I ordered one.  I think it’s ideal for my kayak.

Can you buy a smaller ball to make the app think the fish is bigger?

Well that’s assuming a 2D image.

if taken with a lidar camera which most phones are now equipped, the approximation of girth can be quite accurate.
