If you bass fished as a kid, what was it like?
During the 50s & early 60s all we knew about bass fishing was tule dipping, jigger pole fishing, & doodle socking. Traditional bass fishing wasn't until mid 60s.

Y'all had rod-n-reels! Musta been nice! Growing up in Southwestern Louisiana sporting good store were local Mom-n-Pop stores & catered mostly to saltwater anglers. I started with a cane pole, a cork (not a plastic bobber), shiners, crawfish or earthworms. Round '62-63 I graduated to Zebco 202 "ZeeBee" spincast. Lure selections were even more limited. Bass fishing was mostly walking rice canal levees, marshes, swamps, & river banks.

Effectiveness of baits from year to year
Uhh! I pretty sure pre-spawn may have something to do with it. After pre-spawn the colors change but the bass doesn't stop bitting Traps.

Effectiveness of baits from year to year
A friend & his wife love eating bass. Every pre-spawn he goes up to Toledo Bend for a week. He catches enough to last months throwing nuthin but a white spinnerbait. I seldom if ever take a lure out of my rotation but I will on occasion add one. If I'm working into a "pocket" with a spinnerbait, I work my way out with a chatterbait. Different profile, different action, different angles. Now firmly believe each body of water can require different lures.

Rayburn Red Rat-L-Trap ripped outta grass has been killing em for years and will again the spring. Did the bass stop biting it or did we stop throwing it?

Befuddled and frustrated. Suggestions?
We call those "schooling" bass for the lack of a better term. Quite often there is so much live bait available the bass simply won't touch any artificial.

Everyone has their own personal repertoire of confusion that works for them. Knowledge comes from our experiences, wisdom comes from an accumulation of the understanding of knowledge we rereceived over time.

How to learn lakes for conditions question
The speed at which you cover water is determined by you. You mentioned brush piles, some grass & docks. How about timber, rock or hard bottom. Gizzard Shad, I would try swimbaits, crankbaits, & jerkbaits.

Do you truly match your rod setup to your presentation?
- Do you truly match your rod setup to your presentation?
Worm & Jig rods...absolutely! For years I had a matching pair of Shimano Crucial 6' 10" Medium Heavy X-Fast. Both had Shimano Calcutta 100A mounted on them. Both were spotted with 15# Berkley Big Game. Today my jig rod leans a little bit on the heavy side of medium heavy. While my worm rod is pretty medium heavy. How I determine this is totally by feel. When I buy a new Worm or Jig rod I have to mount a reel on it, string it up, & tie on a jig or t-rig. Yes I have issues ordering on line or having a rod built. 🙄- Discontinued Lures
- Pre-rig or Ride around first?
@A-Jay Long ways to go & short time to get there! Once my transom hits water I start the outboard & turn the console electronics on. They stay on until I pull up back up to the launch.- Jerkbait.....rattle or no rattle?
IDK 😉 I've hundreds over the years on a Smithwick Rattling Rogue. Doing excellent with a Bill Lewis Scope-Stik.- Discontinued Lures
Gene Larew Salty Ringworm 7 1/2", Cinnamon Pepper Neon Junebug Laminate Gene Larew Salty Hawg Craw 5-6" Black-n-Blue, Junebug Blue Claw, & Black Neon And now Stanley Spinnerbaits- Pre-rig or Ride around first?
