  1. If I was fishing my "home" lake and there was a tournament going on I would fish as I normally would. If some pro came up and accused my of taking "his" spot I'd laugh at him and keep on fishing. If he came up to me and asked if I minded him fishing the spot I was currently fishing because he was in a tournament I'd move on to another spot.
  2. If you plan on using spinnerbaits and chatterbaits I'd go with the MH also.
  3. I prefer braid, but I use braid for everything. I use it for the no stretch, and fishing from a kayak it helps.
  4. Depending on how deep you need to go, weightless or weighted wacky rigs,,,,,,, But this past summer I caught my two biggest bass in a quarry casting parallel to a submerged vertical drop off that went from 1 foot down to 18. My plan was to cast as far as I could, let it drop straight down while I slowly let line spool out with my thumb on it and then hop it along the bottom edge of the drop off..........both times the bass hit on the original fall. But..................I also had success with various depth crankbaits casting parallel to that same drop off and reeling back to me so I think it has more to do with where they are suspended at along the way.
  5. Jigs, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits.............
  6. Even though I fish out of a kayak I agree, the advantages with an actual boat are large. I fish tournaments that allow both, if fishing conditions are good I can hold my own, if the fish aren't biting well and you need to find them the boat guys kick my butt pretty much every time.
  7. I have Senko's, Dingers, and Ocho's. I seem to catch equal on all of them. I tend to buy the brand that currently has the colors I need in stock.
  8. I love his show. I met him at the Schaumburg Expo last month and talked a bit. He seemed like a down to earth guy who genuinely appreciates his fans.
  9. Jerkbaits I use the model that suspends at the depths I want to target. I also tend to stay with natural or metallic colors. I use them when fish are not chasing all over after baitfish. Like in colder water. Jerkbaits allow you to present the lure to the bass for a longer time rather than just crank them right by. Plus if you stop the retrieve they don't float back up......at least the suspending type I tend to use. Crankbaits are nothing but fun........There's a particular quarry I fish that is as clear as you describe. There are fingers of land that jut out into the water and submerge but still exist under water........the channels are anywhere from 30 to 90 feet wide. I'll sit at the mouth of the channel and fan cast across the a couple times with a shallow squarebill, if I don't get anything I tie on a deeper diving crankbait, and do it a again, I keep working deeper until I starting getting bit..........At his place shad and bluegill colors work......... You just have to work different depths, colors, and retrieves until you find what the fish want.
  10. Crankbaits and jerkbaits.
  11. Yes, there is a difference............ PowerPro is the best! No wait, Suffix is the best! No wait, Seagur.................... You get the idea...lol
  12. A kayak, especially a SOT made for fishing, is much more stable than a canoe. Plus the way they are made now are extremely able to rig up in various configurations. I'd love to have a boat, and may get one in the near future but absolutely love fishing out of my kayak. Including the part where 5-10 minutes after pulling into the parking lot I'm on the water.
  13. For poppers and other top water with treble hooks, especially those 1/2 oz and under I use my crankbait rod which is a M/Moderate. For jerkbaits I tend to use a MH/Fast.
  14. My current weightless plastics setup is a St. Croix BassX in MH/Moderate with a Lews BB1. The extra flex/whip of the moderate action lets me cast for good distance.
  15. I'd save up for one you will be comfortable in and enjoy. I bought my first one on Craigslist and my current one on Facebook Marketplace. One year old and about half the price of new. My second year in a kayak a friend of mine became interested. He ended up buying a kayak and meeting me at one of my spots. When I saw his little 9 foot kayak with a molded in plastic seat I shook my head. He said he wanted to see if he liked it first.........I told him that there was no way he was going to like sitting in that thing. He just bought a more expensive Vibe.
  16. To me it was worth moving up to the Avid.....
  17. As a self admitted St Croix fanatic I will say that after using a couple different rods for my crankbaits I found that their BassX in MH/Moderate worked great. Under $100 and better than some more expensive rods. I've since switched to their AvidX cranking version but that's more than you want to spend...........Unless you happen to go to their factory and luck into a blemished model............which happened to me!
  18. Same here. I kayak fish most of the time and bring 5 3700 boxes. I think I have 40+ cranks in one box. My swimbait/jerkbait box is the same. I use the rubberbands on most of them to keep from tangling.
  19. I wear a bright PFD and a blaze orange baseball hat.
  20. I'm thinking a paddletail on an underspin or a glide bait.........hmmmmm.......
  21. I'm a braid guy. I use 30 pound Powerpro, no leader. Thinking of trying 30 pound 832 just because.
  22. Often I fish as I slowly move from spot to spot. Based on this post I think I need to add trolling something while I'm moving longer distance to my next spot! I never really thought of that before.
  23. Depends on the type of water and what you're using. If you fish a lot of slop/heavy weeds or medium sized swimbaits I'd add a MH/fast baitcaster. I think what's going to happen is you will soon say, "Crap, I need a fifth", followed by "Crap I need a sixth" LOL That's what happened to me.
  24. From the end of May until the end of August I fish in my kayak 5-6 days a week. Before and after that period it's 2-3 times a week. I check all the screws every couple of weeks, especially for my Boonedox Landing gear. I never store it on the wheels though. Bad for the plastic on the kayak. I also hose it down about once a month. Before I hang it on the wall in the garage for the winter I open up every hatch and make sure inside the hull is dry. I keep them all open all winter. If I remember I try to open any hatches after each trip.
  25. That's a common way to fish. It's one of my favorites both early and late season when the grass or weeds have dropped a bit and the bass are on the flats. Squarebills and jerkbaits in that method caught 90% of my bass last October.
