I have bought four “new” 2021 model Shimano mgl 151 reels to add to my 1990’s Curados, which were the only baitcasting reels I owned up to now. Other than being smaller in hand I really don’t see them as any great advantage, but I do like them.

Local show this weekend. Picked up some swimbaits and ned baits poured by local high school kids, Pretty nice stuff. Also my entry into larger swimbaits, the 6th Sense 6.5” DRAW glide bait. More money than I've ever purposely thrown in the lake!

The 8-10# Mean Green has been on several of my reels for years. Really stronger than its rating but gets kinda stiff above 12# but works great for jigs and Texas rigged worms. I too have a couple BFS baitcaster reels loaded with Suffix Advanced in 8 and 10# and really like it. Never tried Gamma so can’t say.

It’s 7* here with wind chill at -11* and we’re always in the 60-80% humidity range. Sorry @FloridaFishinFool but you’ll get no sympathy. Wool socks, 600gram thinsulate boots do the trick ice fishing all day.

Having to have a tool or tie a knot or done at home before a fishing trip makes it cumbersome, exhausting knot to tie. If your “on water” knot is the Alberto then,,,,,,,,,,,,,,why bother.

All my older rods are cork, however the new Edge carbon split grips is converting me. I like the feel and consistent hand placement when casting. Which being a two handed caster makes sense. Wouldn’t replace any of the cork handle rods but if buying new, leaning more towards a carbon split grip.

Why? There are too many knots just as strong, less confusing and easier to tie. Waste of time for bass fishing, I believe.

Good choice, you’ll have a blast. I went with a simple Garmin Striker 4cv with portable case and found it great for depth, water temp and finding bait fish. Nothing fancy or expensive. Enjoy!

I was brought up to save, and purchase the best I could afford. Whatever that may be; art, furniture, gear, autos or fishing equipment. Which has been what I have done throughout life. I have just now upgraded to the “latest and greatest “ (if you consider 2021 models) reels but still use the 30 year old GLoomis rods. Buy quality first and you’ll not have the desire to continuously buy again. Or at least anytime soon

Wow, the fortunate! It’ll be another couple months here, although decent days do pop up now and then. Was considering going today as the high is 50* but the wind is 20/25 with 35mph gust. Just too much fight for a canoe.
