I don't. I usually kayak fish and would hate to lose it. Stowed away in a waterproof box is the same as not having one if you actually needed one quickly. And, normally, I'm on a private reservoir or a friend's pond. If I still used the big boat on public lakes, I'd probably open carry.

I looked at that pic for a good 30 seconds before I saw the fish. Nice piece. Are those morels? Is that the correct word?

I have always owned firearms. Mainly for hunting.

I have a carry permit, but rarely felt the need to carry.

I had an incident at a stop light, near the Kansas city zoo 3 years ago, that changed my view on carrying.

As my wife and I were waiting at the intersection, 2 men ran toward our vehicle. One toward the passenger door, one toward the drivers door.

I immediately held up my Springfield XDM and yelled "this is not going to end well".

They both turned around and ran. We immediately left the area. We were shaken, but luckily nobody was hurt. I still wonder what their intentions were and what would have happened if I were not armed.

I'm a Texas LTC holder, I always have at least one gun in my car, if not on my person. Here's my personal rules: If at a public park, it stays in my car, but I have a knife handy somewhere on me/in my bag. If I am walking around somewhere new, like a river or stream, doing some banking, it's mounted in a holster at my side, but generally concealed from view. If nothing else, for protection against wild animals. If I am on a boat, it'll be either on me somewhere or in the glovebox of the boat. If there are kids on the boat, I will lock the gun and carry the key to it on me.

It depends on the body of water I am fishing. One small lake in the Oregon coast range that I haul the kayak to is off the beaten path and I am just not that trusting anymore.

I wish I had a crystal ball that would let me know when and where that I don't need to carry a gun but since I don't I always carry at least one gun.

This holster is slower than the others I own, but affords more protection and therefore sees the most use.

Don't own a gun.  But, if I were a gun afficianado, I'd most likely carry.  Having said that, I would not fish in areas where I would be likely to need it.

Several years ago there was a similar thread, and some carried because there are unsavory characters that frequent some launches.  What I wanted to know then is how do you protect the tow rig when you can be fishing miles from the ramp?

I carry a sub-compact 9mm in an IWB holster.  Depending on what I'm wearing, when I get out in the boat, it sometimes goes into a storage compartment.  Usually I'm wearing a supplex fishing shirt or a bass jersey that works well for in-the-waistband concealed carry.

Where I live, the odds are millions to one that I'll ever need it.  But you know the old saying about "better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it."   I also believe that when participating in outdoor activities, a handgun could be a life-saving signaling device or attention-getter in the case of an emergency.

Tight lines,

Bob

For me, I don't carry with an intention to frequent places where I might need a weapon. It would be irresponsible of me, as a concealed carry individual, to purposefully put myself amongst unsavory characters where a weapon was required for me to feel safe.

If I had a ramp where that was an issue, I just wouldn't go to that ramp/lake/river (jut like you said). Even having my weapon, even being trained, even having to qualify with a side arm for the Marine Corps every year, nothing beats the old adage of being that bigger man, and walking/staying away.

My gun does not make me invincible, and I don't ever let my mindset portray that.

Also, as you stated, if there were shady people at the launch, why would you still launch and leave your tow rig at the ramp? That's just zero common sense and sounds like someone just wants an excuse to carry.

I carry if I’m camping on the shore. When I was at Eufaula I carried a 10mm with 200 grain solids because of the giant gators everywhere. I guess it’s because I didn’t grow up around them, but those things scare me worse than bears ever did.

I don't carry on the water typically, but this is an interesting sentiment.  Knock on wood, I've never had either pulled on me, but a knife is much, much scarier in close quarters.  Given 20 feet or so or time to draw, possibly a different story.  I've done some tactical training for law enforcement, military, and contractors.  There is no good way to deal with a knife.

Yes there is, shoot the sob waving it around,, ;=)

If I am wearing underwear, there’s a high probability that a weapon is within arms reach and my personal space is 10 yards .......because the average younger guy can close on me in 2 seconds.  While this is alarming, FBI statistics show that in civilian related shootings, less than 2% of the time, the attacker was targeting an armed person.  It is far more likely that you would find yourself in a predicament where others are threatened..

I can fit my XDS on my belt in my kayak cockpit. So I do! There's occasionally unsavory characters about, but i once watched a beaver chase a guy in a coanoe. Cornered him in a cove on the bank surrounded by large rocks. Turned into hand to hand..  or rather paddle to tail combat. Funniest thing I've ever seen, but it could have messed him up.

Where I carry the meth-heads ain't gonna feel a knife stab. That's why I carry a .45. Its like a punch, only a punch don't produce a hole through you.

There are meth heads in Eastern PA?

No. They are all fine, upstanding citizens with a grand future. All are possible candidates for Harvard or Yale. You would be surprised how many MENSA members reside in my area.

I never thought about this subject until a lady around here got attacked by a rabid Coyote. She had to jump into a feeder canal to escape. I have been more wary when unloading my kayak in the early morning hours at an empty boat launch.

My Kershaw or pepper spray ain't gonna stop a rabid Coyote. Wish I could carry but NY gun laws are oppressive.

When dealing with a canine don’t think kershaw , think blunt force trauma. I had a buddy with a rat problem and he told me his brother went after one with a butcher knife Hahahahah. You could jump into a barrel with a rat and a butcher knife and never kill that little booger!!! A rip rap or dogwood branch is your best friend when dealing with almost any animal that is trying to eat you. There’s a lot of people and animals that can survive dozens of stab wounds but not much can survive getting thumped in the skull

I have never carried and don’t have a permit to do so. Honestly I’m a terrible shot with a pistol. I keep the armor of God and a sharp blade on my person at all times. And I have dozens of fishing buddies that carry as soon as their feet touch the floor every morning

Never leave home with out it. Land or sea.

You know, I'm rebuilding my childhood fishing boat, and am debating adding a swivel gun. :D
