Another tragedy

Featured Replies

Just read on another site about 2 teens/1 father missing from a high school bass tourney on Pickwick LK. Boat was found. No word about the three. Say a prayer for all affected.

Doesn't look very promising. The boat went through the dam, hopefully they didn't as well.

For those of ya'll inclined to do so, there' s two youngsters and their boat captain missing on Pickwick, or Kentucky lakes near Savannah, Tennesee.

Let's hope for a good ending to this. Usually there are a lot of people affected.

Two topics have been merged.  I hope for a favorable outcome to this, but it sounds like it isn't going to be a happy ending.  So sad.

There was visual confirmation on cameras inside the dam spillways of the boat going through the dam between 8 and 8:30 a.m. Saturday. All three were still on the boat when it entered the spillway.

Not good.

You would think they would

make it physically impossible for that to happen but now that’s two years in a row

Or at least a rope with clips across the dam so you can jump ship with a life jacket on and hold onto the rope and let the boat go? What a tragedy. :(

There’s a few with buoys on a rope above and below them in the mountains but not TVA dams

I don't understand the rationale behind that thinking.  All the dams in my area have "Floating Safety Barriers" to prevent such tragedies.  Here's what one looks like:

A boat can't go over the top of them.  And boy howdy is there ever a fine if you touch them with your boat if it's not necessary!

@Glenn, hopefully we will see some of those on the Tennessee River in the future. I’m sure TVA has some BS reason for not having them but that looks like something they could have at least grabbed. I haven’t spent a whole lot of time at Pickwick dam, the only thing I can imagine is maybe there is something in place that was getting pulled under by the current or waves

If there is not some sort of system to prevent a tragedy like this from happening then maybe WE should be the one's to rally together and get something implemented at all dams so that there is not a needless loss of lives!

TVA needs to do something.  I really wonder what happened.  They had to have been very close to the dam when they lost power.

I know one thing,  you won't catch me within 5 miles of a dam when I know the spillways are open.

There's a reason why BASS cancelled their 2nd tournament on Chick.  The TVA system has been rolling with heavy rains all winter...TVA really aren't lakes, they are just a river with some slow down spots they call dams.  Open the spillways and it's a river again.  Dangerous stuff for those with equipment that isn't up to par.

From what I understand their boat wouldn’t start so they just fished around above the dam on the TM and got pulled over somehow. I fish below the spillways all the time but I’ve never fished above one. Back in the day everyone tied their boats to the top side of chilhowee dam and fished for trout all night. There are a bunch of buoys around it now that a different company out of Canada bought all those lakes. Pickwick is just such a monstrous amount of fast water, maybe they have tried to put something there before that got swept away

There are unlimited options available on Pickwick that are almost "no risk" even when all

flood gates are open. People sometimes make poor choices.

Heartbreaking...
