Do you have a ritual or lucky charm when fishing?

Featured Replies

I normally fish with my grandson, sometimes his Dad, our son-in-law comes along.  Today my grandson asked why I always waited for everyone to cast and retreave their lines before I make my first cast.  It has become such a habit that I really don't even think about it,  it's just something I've always done. It doesn't matter how many people I go with, I don't make my first cast until everyone else has cast and retreaved their line. My grandson thinks it is weird, but it is ingrained in my fishing as a ritual I guess.

I've carried a Gerber Pixie Trout and Bird knife in my tackle box or bag for the last 50 years. I check to make sure I have it before I leave every time. Lucky charm,  good luck piece, or just a habit, I must have it everytime I fish.

Am I strange or do you have a quirk, a ritual or a lucky charm to help you catch fish? or

I like to bring my fishing license, it seems to keep me out of trouble!

  • I absolutely must have a rod, reel, line, and lure when I go fishing.

Nope: it's just another form of superstition...and I don't have any of those.

Nope, no ritual, superstitions, lucky charms or otherwise, looks like your just strange ??

I know plenty of anglers who have those though some are even laughable  even in their opinion ?

this is a holdover to the days when hunter-gatherers had lots of time on their hands during the day waiting for their prey to present themselves and to deliver the killing blow accurately. I would be rubbing my lucky rabbits foot as well.

I don’t change my boxers until I get skunked. Literally ??

But yeah, I’m a routine guy. I’d be easy to assassinate. Not so much ritual for me as just things I always do in the same order. I feel weird/lost if I mix them up. Always affects my confidence fishing.

Not even lure color preferences?

That's not superstition - that's an informed choice based on past performance.

No rituals or lucky charms for me. I rely on pure skill and sometimes it works.

But is it really?  Superstitions don't come out of nowhere -- they have their origins in past experiences too; in most cases, misinterpretations of chance events.  I'm just saying...

Superstitions are used to explain 'unexplainable' things.

I can't go any further into that without Glenn or one of the mods dinging me... 'nuff said.

Yeah, I don't think someone choosing a green pumpkin Senko because, in their experience it catches fish in the conditions their facing, really jives with the definition of a superstition.

su·per·sti·tion
  1. excessively credulous belief in and reverence for supernatural beings.
    Similar:
    • a widely held but unjustified belief in supernatural causation leading to certain consequences of an action or event, or a practice based on such a belief.

The only thing I must have with me is my punch rod. Regardless if I’m told the waters I plan to fish has grass or not
It just keeps me warm and fuzzy.

Actually, I wear the same hat every time.  It might be time for a new hat based on recent successes ?

Well spoken! My opinion as well, no time for superstition or other such things.....too many colors and shapes to sort.

I carry a pocket New Testament that I literally never read (I use the bigger, complete version at home). I guess I never considered this. It's always in my bag and is on the checklist even though I've never used it once.

Very nice looking fish. My grandson is 13. It is so interesting to here him talk about fishing and what is going on in his life. Certainly not the 1950s and 60s of my youth. Being in their lives is so important to both them and you. Nice going.

If I forget my camera I will catch many fish.  If I forget my scale, I will catch big fish. If I forget both I will catch my PB.  I don't bring anything special for luck, I do try my best to leave all my problems on land.

I have no superstitions. My only ritual is locating some bass....
