He caught half of his weight targeting bass on Garmin LiveScope in a 15- to 30-foot drain that he said held “hundreds of fish” the first two days. He used a spinning rod with a 3/16-ounce jighead and a prototype lure from Yum that only this week earned an official name, the FF Sonar Minnow, which stands for “Forward Facing Sonar Minnow.”

“It’s a bait that I can cast to the fish and work the rod and keep it on him; the bait does not move forward,” Christie said. “It’s a technique that I’ve been working on for about five years now.

“A lot of times you throw a swimbait over the top of them and they’ll just trail it. But you can drop this bait right to the fish and keep it on top of him.”
 

My question is what does this lure look like?  Can’t find it anywhere. I know it’s a prototype but nothing is kept secret nowadays. I was thinking something like a Damiki or Ned rig but he says he cast the lure.

he did mention a prototype YUM bait. i didn't get a good look at it though. he was also tossing a 5/8 oz. war eagle jiu-jigsu a lot around the docks

 

Sweet....I caught the end of the sports coverage on the news and didn't see who won.  Oklahoma pros have done well the past few years with Evers and now Christie winning classics.  Looks like that jui-jitsu jig Christie used is just an arkie head w/ dimples.

Kind of what a lot of guys do bed fishing ?

 

I might have watched 5 minutes total of Classic coverage. Everything I saw of Christie he was flipping docks with jigs. YUM might be releasing a new bait and just wanted him to mention it because they know that's all it takes for a bait to take off for at least a while.

It isn’t  my style either but if I were fishing for money I would not hesitate to do it.

he spent the first 3-4 hours each morning on live fishing deep /w some minnow bait that he said isn't going to be out for a while. 

Sounds like he caught as many fisherman as fish.  Sponsors ought to be happy

Happens like clockwork every year ?

He said several times on live the jig was 1/2oz. Should be available soon I would think.

That bait was supposed to be magical.

That jig has been around forever. I guess since Pradco bought War Eagle he has started using them. 

 Another company in Arkansas used to make one that looked just like it. Pig Sooie baits or something like that.

They had a booth at this years classic with the Howell classic trophy on display haha

Y'all don't buy up all my Craw Chunks.  I caught my PB with that trailer and a whole mess of big bass with it on the back of a jig.  It's a very good bait for the amount of money you spend.

Looks a lot like a Berkley Power minnow/Twitchtail minnow. I'm sure it doesn't literally sit in one spot, but likely with a light jighead combined with braided line it has somewhat of a parachute effect that sort of hovers the bait in the fish's face. Pretty similar to how I fish a Ned rig with the swim-shake-glide retrieve. Moves so slowly and looks defenseless so the fish can't help themselves.

damiki rig fishing. you fish it vertically off of the bottom ABOVE the fish. jeff gustafson explains it pretty well on a wired video which he also used the same technique to win on the tennessee river last year

Damiki is more vertical though, sounds like Christie is talking about casting to fish he can see in front of him and the bait is almost hovering in front of them. 

Nobody should try a tiny fluke on a jig head, it won’t catch anything

A Gulp/power minnow/twitchtail minnow on a 1/16 or 1/8oz jighead just cast and swam back was my Ned rig before I knew what a Ned rig was.
