Looks Like I’ll Be Taking A Break

Hey ya’ll,

 

Well, looks like I’ll be taking a break from fishing. I’ve had a back problem going on for a while now, reinjured it a couple of times and for the past week or so have tried to continue light activity despite having constant inflammation and low level pain. I posted on my feed that I wanted to kayak fish this morning but that is because I was anticipating getting better and it seems I am not. I showed up to a pond this AM super early and noticed that even the act of casting seemed to bug my back a little. Never really paid attention to it but there definitely seems to be something there and might help explain why I have not been getting better. So, right now, to be safe, I’ll be taking a break from fishing and pretty much anything upper-body related. There’s still ways I can enjoy nature around here so I’ll look for other opportunities. 
 

Next step is to see a doctor

    At this time I’d like to say that the break has ceased. I feel able to fish when I want and how I want, but not necessarily for as long as I used to or through the same means (bank instead of kayak).

  • Just think what could happen if you sneezed while sitting on the toilet reading. You might never walk again!!!

You take care of yourself, man. Back problems are nothing to sneeze at...I know from experience.

 

Heal up, listen to the Doc, and we'll see you on the water at some point - hopefully still see you here regularly...you can 'fish' vicariously through us ;)

As many others, I’ve had back problems for years also and the best thing to do now before you find out the cause and possible remedies is to do what you’re doing. 
 

Don’t try to lift nothing heavier than a gallon of milk, sleep with your knees raised just a little and sit as upright as you can. 
 

Back problems can linger for years especially if you don’t listen to your doctor or just as important to what it’s telling you.

The good news is I don’t believe this back issue has anything to do with my lower back. I think it is simply my lat but we will see what doctor says. I don’t think lat is as bad as lower back but not sure. I’ve only hurt my lower back once and I healed from that deal very readily. That part of my body is pretty healthy

I started having back problems in my fifties.  It gradually got to the point where I had to hang onto the kitchen counter to make coffee in the morning.  I had to sell my boat because I couldn't get in and out.  I saw a number of doctors.  Some said they could fix me with physical therapy.  Some wanted to give me shots in my spine.  Others wanted $10,000 to laser me.   What I discovered was back problem are a huge cash cow.  I sought out the most experienced back specialist in Florida.  It took me almost a year to get an appointment.   After numerous MRIs, I was told to wait.   The surgeon told me I would know when I was ready and he was right.  A year ago last March, I had major surgery on my back that fused four of my bottom vertebrae.  Recovery has been a long process, but I am now able to do everything I wish without pain. My advice is this.  Don't call TV doctors or people with bill board spine ads.  Chances are, you may not need surgery.  Find the most experienced orthopedic surgeons in your area.  Find someone who has done thousands of these operations.  Don't listen to a friend who may or may not have done their research.  Back problems are serious business.  The quality of the rest of your life will be in that surgeon's hands.

I've read on the InterWeb that sitting low in a crouched confined area bobbing around while repeatedly casting with the inability to properly use lower body muscles in the motion for a few hours at a time is good to alleviate back pain, maybe try that...

I know we already talked about this but for the rest of the community . . .

Eat right & get PLENTY of sleep.

Stay Hydrated and keep a positive out look.

Finally, as you recover & heal, RESIST the urge to 'check' your own progress.

Meaning don't do what makes it hurt to see if it's getting better.

Doing that several or even a couple of times a day can seriously slow your progress & healing time.

You'll know when it's better, believe me.

To add on to this, I made some decisions during the healing process that I regret. I mentioned that I’ve reinjured this deal a couple of times and it was just because I was impatient and wanted to continue activity. Not very smart. If I made smarter choices I think this would have been over with in a few weeks.

The thing you shouldnt do is rest your back for more than 48 hrs. If and when you find out if its a badly herniated disk you may need surgery but alot of times a strict back stretching routine and back strengthing routine can fix the problem.

I survived two L5-S1 back surgeries where the doctor trimmed the disk of the herniation. The1st back operation was done in 1991 in new jersey by my companies insurance company dr, he did a bad job and left a part of the herniation rubbing my nerve.

The following operation was done in 1992 exactly a year later by a well known dr at the university of minnesota hospitol.

Now today i do yoga everyday for my lower back and upper back even while on vacation in chicago and greenbay wisc i am doing my yoga in the room. It is a must that you stretch as an operation alone isnt guaranteed to get you 100% painfree but stretch and weight train your back and you will be surprised on the results.

Remember this yoga and strengthing has to hapen on a regular basis or nothing will be gained.

Have you considered seeing a Chiropractor? I have had back problems for many years and it is no fun. I go to a Chiropractor on a regular schedule and he has done me a world of good.

A known fact is that sitting on the john and reading while taking a  deuce is one of the worst positions you can put your lower back into. :MSN-Emoticon-show-ass-107:

how about trolling from your kayak?  some day after stressfull work events, i find just being out on the water very theraputic for body and mind.

No way it can happen, but thanks. Paddling is part of how I reinjured this deal.

I've been incorporating a ton of mobility work into my routine and have found that lower back pain for me is usually tight hips and quads. Upper back is t-spine extension and/or rotation, tight lats and pecs. Usually the latter 3 really affects my shoulder mobility. 

 

Takes me 30 - 40 minutes on some days to take the necessary steps to unlock the tightness from sitting all day and get to where I want to be. 

 

Good luck and follow the advice from a professional and not some jig fishead. :)

Yeah, I’d have to sit in a chair on the bank and at least watch a set line or something. I get angry if no fishing

I told a guy I met here that if he's ever fishing and wants some company to let me know. Or I might just sit at a pond and chill out one of these days. Trying to keep my sanity intact.
