Wife and I were cruising up the lake at 30 mph in 32 ft of open water " I'm observant " lol,

When all the sudden a loud pop and the sound of marbles bouncing around inside the outboard.

Took the boat to a certificate Mercury center and they said the entire lower unit was trashed.

Mercury was very accommodating and said new lower unit is on it's way.

Good news is, I won't have to change the oil in the lower unit this winter. Ha Ha

 

I hate when that happens…..

I have a 2 minute video of the lower letting loose on my 250 Yamaha.  I just went and watched it again.  Brought a tear to my eye and made my wallet $4,000 lighter. 😂

Yes, the boat is a 2023.

Luckily we only 300 yards from the ramp when it let go. 

Sounds like what my back did. Just motoring along and it came apart. 

Better doing that instead of locking up.  Don't ask how I know.

I am glad you were close to the ramp. One of my fears is always something happening and me not being able to get back to the ramp.

Stuff breaks.    "They" keep making lower units smaller and smaller for less drag, and less prop slippage.   I suspect the lower is the most fragile part of most modern boat motors.

About 200 lbs if taken in quarters.

 

I had a prop shaft snap off at the seal doing 70+ mph @ 6,000 rpm on my Merc 200. Just revved to sky and I shut it off ASAP and coasted to a stop. I started the motor and put it into gear and it just revved without moving forward. Took a look and no prop or shaft. 

 

I think what happened was that the prop I had was worked pretty thin, and had a few cracks welded on it and I think one of the ears flew off and caused a massive imbalance at 6,000 rpm which then caused the shaft to shear off.

 

Of all things, for some reason, my homeowners insurance covered it IIRC.

I was very lucky.  I could get back to the cottage on my trolling motor and my brother in law towed me to the marina with a pontoon (oh the agony).  The marina did not work on Yamaha so luckily I found a Yamaha dealer not far away from Waupaca, Wisconsin where we stay.  Second big stroke of luck was there was 1 oem lower in the state of Wisconsin sitting in a warehouse and could be shipped in.  Third stroke of luck was that with a few extra $$$ and a case of Spotted Cow beer, the shop moved me to the front of the line.  I was back on the water in 3 days.
