I seen somewhere, on this forum I think, where someone mentioned Texas rigging a grub instead of using a jighead. I thought it sounded neat, and I liked that it would be much more weedless than a jighead. The other day I was fishing a bank that was pretty tight for casting clearance and into some heavy cover just off shore. I used an 1/8oz bullet sinker, a 1/0 worm hook, a 3" Zoom Fat Albert grub in green pumpkin, and was able to coax old iron jaws into nibbling at first... then full commit. The result was a nice little fighter, probably 1.5 pounds.

 

 

Was my first catch on a Texas Rigged grub, but it won't be the last I'm sure. The lake I was fishing is pretty heavily pressured, so using this is as much of trying to find something out of the ordinary as anything else.

 

My buddy whom took the pic caught a similar sized bass on a ned rig, so we both left happy that day.

I’ve fished a Texas Rigged Fat Albert Grub a lot.  My PB smallmouth (6 lbs) was caught on one.  I use a 3/0 hook.  I would be concerned about using a 1/0 hook with such a thick bait.  Grubs are a very versatile bait for sure.

All of my larger sized hooks are too long for the grub. I was using Eagle Claw 1/0, as it's the only 1/0 I have currently.

I’ve had stellar trips pitching a T rigged Fat Albert with a 3/16 ounce sinker. I would fish behind other anglers and do well.  This was well before all the high action creature baits became available.

have a look at the VMC finesse rugby jig or the Brewer wide-gap slider head.  I don't know if these will fit a 3", but they work well with 4" grubs. They permit texas rigging without a separate slip-sinker, which is what I usually prefer for a swimming presentation.

was your 1/0 a wide gap?… or a straight worm hook. 

This particular technique was incredibly effective during the dead heat of summer when it was almost impossible to get a bite at the very shallow pond that I fish. It saved me on a lot of days where I probably would have skunked otherwise and even caught me a few good fish!!!  They make weedless EWG Ned heads and I have some to try this winter but pegged Texas waited small baits are definitely in the rotation for me right now.  Don't be afraid to try smaller finesse ribbon tail worms because those have been very productive for me so far this cold season!

@Mobasser Those are Z-Man, they mare a lot more than just plastics.

If you are needing more room for your larger hooks you might try Kalin Mogombo grubs.

These are bass union weedless ned heads and I like them a lot.  The eye will catch a little snot on the bottom if you have it in your waters, but on the whole they will come through wood and rocks really well.  They go down to 1/16 which is what I carry in them.  I would just go texas rig with anything heavier.

Been fishing T-rigged grubs for decades, and for good reason!

 

 

I am going to have to T-rig up a rod for this weekend with the 3" power bait grubs.

Texas rigging any soft plastic is less productive vs. exposed hook point presentations IF COVER DOESN'T FORCE YOU TO.

It is a standard worm hook. It was Eagle Claw hook as thats all the 1/0 I have currently.

 

I didn't have any issues hooking up. I had him hooked deeply in the roof/sidish of the mouth about 1.5 back. Wasn't in the corner or something just barely.

Seems like line twist would be an issue and you'd want a swivel in there somewhere?!?

Probably won't win any rewards for my photography but here's how I rig it.

Owner Rig ‘n offset is a short shank wide gap.

Thanks for sharing Tennessee Boy. I'll have to dig around and see what I have that will work. I think I have some 2/0 Gamakatsu EWG, though I prefer regular offset worm hooks over EWG anywhere I can get away with them.

 

Our local Academy was out of the Gamakatsu 1/0 worm hooks whenever I've been over the last month.

@Bazoo An example of the hook @WRB suggested, rigged on a grub.

I wonder if could find those locally... I know the Academy has some Owner hooks on the hook wall. I do like the look of that. It'd let the body have a bit more action.

@Bazoo Owners are great hooks, IMO. Sticky sharp. I do see Acdemy does have them online - set to your store & see.

I do like the looks of the Owner Rig’n hook although I would probably go a size bigger than the one in the graphic. 😆 The Owner Jungle Gap and Haymaker might be other good options.  The Fat Albert is very soft and is less likely to prevent the hook from penetrating than many grubs so go with the size you confident in.
