Did you catch your PB during the prespawn?

Featured Replies

My personal best largemouth in NY state is a 6lb 10oz caught on a generic soft plastic 5" paddle tail in red/orange flake rigged on an unweighted wide gap worm hook, from a golf course pond in August at 2:30pm on a bright sunny day. My best NY Smallmouth was caught on a white/chartreuse 1/2 oz spinnerbait caught in July in Cayuga Lake at around 4pm on a cloudy day with a light but steady wind. That fish was 6lb 8oz. In the early 1970s, when I lived in Florida, I caught a number of big Largemouth (I am guessing 9+ lbs or bigger) but back then I never even thought of weighting them. If I remember correctly, my best came in March or April.

No, caught my biggest bass 8.4 in August on a Texas rig worm. Caught a 6.3 in march one year. Most of the remaining big bass I’ve caught have been in the fall.

This bass is a tie for my PB.  It was caught on May 7 post spawn, with zero eggs, and nothing in it's stomach.  I tried to release the bass after a long fight that included a significant amount of time wrapped around a tree.  The bass would swim away then go belly up.  After trying many times I killed it and gave it to another angler who had a cooler in their boat.  I cleaned it before I gave it to them, and it was the first time I had ever cleaned a bass that didn't have something in it's stomach.  It was completely empty.

The bass was 26 and 3/4 inches long and weighed 10.8 pounds.  I have always wondered how much it would have weighed pre spawn.  The tail was bloody so I assume it had recently spawned.  Any one have guess as to pre spawn weight?

Good lord, that thing is a post spawn??

My PB smallmouth (tie) have been recent pre-spawns from Mille Lacs in the month of May.  PB largemouths have been in the late summer or fall months.

Mine was on a hot and sunny day in mid July, around 12:30 in the afternoon.

I would say 80% girth to length ( Lx L x G / 1200=weight in pounds. Add 1% for pre spawn eggs. 26.75 x 26.75 x 21.4 =15,313.0375  / 1200 = 12.76 lbs add  1% for pre spawn with eggs = 14 lbs.

I’m not sure if she was pre spawn. Rude to ask a husky gal If she’s large of preggers. But I will say my PB was caught very early in the spring this year. Iowa in late march water temp probably wasn’t even 50 degrees yet honestly.

PB largemouth was pre-spawn, about a week after the ice was off a forest preserve lake. March 20 if memory serves. I didn't get any measurements but based on other fish it was probably around 21 inches and 5 pounds. Honestly it might be a little bigger. I'll try to find the pic cause curious what you guys would guess. Ya I know it's hard to tell from a pic but still.... Came on a #7 rapala rattlin rap.

Longest smallie was post spawn by a couple weeks or so. late May. Over 21" but thin due spawn. Still an amazing fish and fight in high water (river).

Heaviest smallie came on a different river in early August. Didn't get any measures due operator error but by far the absolute heaviest smallie I have ever held. Hit a whopper plopper.

Mine was shallow for sure. Probably already on a bed, although I didn’t see it . Caught on Dec. 31st.  Many would say that’s too early. Not in a warm winter in Florida. I caught another 1 off a bed on Christmas day that was 6.3.

No, I caught mine (LMB) in the dead of summer. It was very fat. I don't think it was a spawner or had fully recovered. I don't think it would have weighed much more during prespawn. My SMB was caught in November, so I guess you could say it was prespawn. It was also well fed and fat.

I had a great presoawn season.  I think I tied my PB 3x, or got really close.

PB was early june which is late postspawn/early summer for us.

PB2 and PB3 were both early prespawn, 56-57 degree water so late Feb.

No. My PB is 8 lbs 1 oz and 23.5" long. I caught it on November 6th, 2022. She was a very healthy fish over relative weight. I'd guess with a full load of eggs she probably would've been around 9.

My PB was caught pre-spawn and she was deformed by the eggs she was carrying. She looked like she'd swallowed a softball. She fought as well as you'd expect given her condition, which is hardly at all.

PB smallmouth during pre-spawn. PB largemouth in the summer.
