Alabama Rig - Legality

Featured Replies

Here is what I found in the Iowa fishing regs:

Hooks When fishing by hook-and-line, you cannot use more than two lines or more than two hooks on each line when still fishing or trolling. When fly fishing, you cannot use more than two flies on one line. When you are trolling and bait casting, you cannot use more than two trolling spoons or artificial baits on one line. You can use a third line if you have a valid third line fishing permit. You cannot leave fishing line or lines with hooks in the water unattended by being out of visual sight of the lines. One hook is a single, double or treble-pointed hook, and all hooks attached as a part of an artificial bait or lure are counted as one hook. An Alabama (umbrella) rig is not an artificial bait or lure

I'm not a dumb man but I'm also not an attorney that specializes in legal writing.

Can I use 4 hooks? Only 2 hooks?

Unless I'm interpreting this incorrectly, it seems that Iowa is pretty strict compared to other states.

What state are you in and how many hooks can you have?

Also, do you throw it?  :)

I’m not an attorney either but I still give free legal advice that is worth every penny.😁

You can use 2 hooks per line.  That’s a very strict rule.  I don’t think you can even fish a crank bait or jerk bait with 3 hooks.  In Tennessee it’s 3 hooks.  We have a stated exception for Sabiki rigs.

I rarely fish an Alabama rig.

Minnesota is even more strict.  The regs state that only one of the ends of an Alabama rig can have a hook.  The rest have to be dummies.

For this reason I don't even bother.  There is no advantage over any other lure.

Holy chit, I'm hoping that isn't correct.

I can't fish a Vision 110 with three trebles??????????

2 or 3 treble hooks attached to 1 lure is considered 1 hook.

The exception added is Alabama rigs are not 1 lure, therefore only 2 lures can be used on the A-rig.
California has similar regulations for fresh water fishing.

I am not an attorney, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express a few times.

In other words, I'm legally clueless.

This state limits umbrella rigs to 5 hooks.

I do fish them when the time is right.

For me, that's late summer through mid-fall.

In fact, I might be launching one tomorrow.

As a bona fide sea lawyer I approve this message. 😁

I think the patchwork of Alabama rig rules from state to state is why national tournament circuits often prohibit their use.  It varies too much.

I'm ashamed of myself for not coming up with that one.

Yeah at one or two, you are just playing the Lottery.

No thanks.

They hit the center/furthest back wire 99% of the time. The draw is the large profile/school of fish, I would say even if you're limited to 1 hook it's worth throwing.

In Nebraska, it's max of two hooks per each line.

My brother continues to fish an A-Rig...he only has two hooks...the rest are dummy / hookless.

Still catches fish.

I have issued you a full refund.  I should stick to practicing law in Tennessee.

In Kentucky we may use an umbrella rig with 5 hooks best of my knowledge and research.

None of it makes it worth casting a chandelier for me.

If all they will eat is an A-Rig I’m doing chores!  😝😝😝😝

@Pat Brown, dusting off the chandelier is a chore.

I can use as many hooks as I want to in Nayarit, There are also no size restrictions, or limits.  You are supposed to have a fishing license, but I have not met a single angler who has bought one for fishing in freshwater.

In Maryland Arigs can only have 3 baits with hooks. Never heard of the Game Warden checking but that's the rule.

Allen

Indiana is three hooks (jerk bait, umbrella rig etc.) considered one lure/bait. Or three lines at one time (three single line poles with one hook each) typical bobber fishing or trolling rigs.
