Big jig trailer recommendation?

Featured Replies

I’m looking for a craw or beaver style trailer that would match up to a 7/0 jig hook. Magnum rage bugs are on my list but I’m not quite sure if they’ll be big enough. Any other recommendations?

RI 5.2 Big Texan works good on 5/0 jig hook.

Strike King use to make one called the Lobster, but I haven’t seen these in quite awhile..you might look where musky lures are sold for sizable baits such as these.

Large Gene Larew salt craws

Your favorite bigger swimbait is worth a shot.  Jigs with swimbaits seem to catch giant bass for me.

OSP Dolive Beaver Magnum.

Minimum recommended hook is 6/0.

They look sweet but man, $30 for a 3 pack. I’ll see if I can find some on sale.

6th sense bodega

What’s the action like on it? Is it pretty dead or do the tails move much on the fall?

It's mentioned above but the 6.8 6th Sense Bodega might work. I have seen it but not fished it. Another would be a 5in or 6in single tail Yamamoto grub.

One more that I am not familiar with at all... It's from Big Bite Baits. I am not sure of the name but it's a beaver style bait that comes in a 5in size. It's pretty big by most standards.

Adding another, the Double Wide Beaver is 5.2in. It might work as well.

5.20 Beaver in Big Texan works good in the fall and early pre spawn when big crusty crawdads are digging or emerging from clay winter burrows, speaking from experience.

I’m interested in this. I have some buckeye mop jigs and they’re pretty darn big. Not sure the hook size but the skirt is loooong.

@woolleyfooley You can trim those down and thin them out even. I bought maybe 5 dozen jigs this year and I’ve modified a few this way.

I hear you. Expensive.

There's also the Raid 2Way Magnum.

Video below is using the smaller version, but you get the idea. Fast Forward to 24:10 for the jig work.

Also, most of the Japanese bait manufacturers have HUGE craws/beavers. Geecrack Bunny Hog comes to mind. Lots of guys having success using a 4.7 or 5.7 Hira Tailor on jigs. While not a craw style, this is a very substantial bait!

I use the Bruiser baits XGL for a dead/glide action and a gambler super stinger for a bit of kick.  Both are 5.25" and I'm a sucker for GP/purple.

Venom Nightmare Craw 6.25" and the Magnum Baits Mauler 6.25" are beefy. I fish both on a Gamakatsu EWG 7/0 so it should match a 7/0 jig hook nicely.

Don't overlook a big worm.

Man the venom craw looks like money. I'll have to try those out.

Hmm makes sense, mimicking a baitfish feeding on the bottom instead of a traditional craw pattern. I've never even thought of this, only ever thrown craw or beaver trailers on my jigs. I will have to try this.

Is the bottom pic a buckeye mop jig with a big worm?

Zoom Horny Toad is what I use when I need a really big trailer.
