What do you consider your most productive old time lure?

Featured Replies

I just read a story on Bass Fishing Archives about Rip Nunnery. I knew of his record catch many years ago but was not aware that he sold lures.

I made a lure I called a jig 'n blade and have caught good fish with it. Turns out to be a copy of Rip Nunnerys "Twig Pig".

Old time Bomber.  Photo is of some of the first fish I caught with it back in the 1970's. Still works today crankin' standing timber. I have 3 left.

When I was mostly panfishing, a small Roostertail was a favorite. I assume a bigger one would work well for bass. However, I'd want a snap swivel or barrel swivel to limit line twist.

Pop r or Rico, Shad Rap, tube, Road Runners, blade bait, Cotton Cordell Spot, single tail grub…

Almost 70 years of age. Plastic worms and lizards were inexpensive. Caught loads on these. I still use both. No one talks about fishing with a lizard. I always have one tied on.

@rboat I have rat-l-trap 1/2OZ I got from @WRB-2.0 and I lost count of how many fish I caught with it. RIP Tom.

This is a saltwater bait made by Gag’s Grabbers aka Al Gag’s baits and is called Mr Bunker. Been out of production for a long time. There was a 3” and 4” version. I had the 4” in a bunker color and caught hundreds of fish on it, including a 6-5 that’s still my tourney PB. I also saw a 5.5 and 7lber caught on it in the same day.

@Swimbaitstud thank you so much for identifying it. I really wanted to know it.

'Chartreuse/ White Snagless Sally #4, been using one for over 40 years and they still catch fish.

I’d have to say spinner bait for me as well

I had a couple of Strike King "Spin Dance" spinnerbaits with the Oklahoma blades. They caught a lot of bass , especially in the spring. Now I copy them and still tear the bass up in the spring. Had a 24 lb limit two or three years ago which is really good for this area.

Shad rap or a floating rapala

I’m bringing back the tube hard this year. Used to serve me well 20 years ago and I feel like people have forgotten about it with all the new bfs stuff now. Gonna throw it on a jighead and flip it also

3/8 oz. white rooster tail with a nickel blade

The Rapala Original Floating Minnow in the silver color has been my most productive old-time lure. I fish it very fast in clear water, so the fish don't get a good look at it, and it works well.

Over the years, the three "vintage" lures (in production for 40-50 years) that have been the most productive for me are the Rapala shad Rap, the smallest size Rebel Pop-R, and a 4" worm made by Slider. I have other vintage lures that have produced very well for me too (black jitterbug at night, Rapala floating minnow, Bomber model A, and a beetle spin), but the first three I mentioned are more consistent producers.

That shiner pattern on top is a killer around here. Too bad they stopped making it in that color.

My bad. After looking at the Bill Lewis website, it looks like that color is still in production, just under another name.

If I had to go back to fishing with only one rod, a Rattle Trap, Hula Popper, Tiny Torpedo, Rapala Floating Minnow, Mepps #3 inline spinner, Rebel Deep Wee R , and a crappie jig. I would most likely catch as many bass as I do now with the Bait Monkey permanently attached to my side.

Those things are still only 5 bucks and will hold their own against all the lures available today.Reminds me. I busted the lip off my Baby Bass 5A last fall, need to pick up another.

I still throw those like a 12 year old . Ditches, ponds, rivers, ox-bows anywhere there are bass. I found some vintage 3/8 oz ones at an old tackle store a few years back and had plenty of big fish photos in the latest catch picture thread caught on beetles.

Mepps inline spinners. They are probably the most old-school and also the plain oldest. I bought a bunch of them used and I have no idea how old they are. Still catch fish.

Rebel Wee Crayfish. Been fishing them for years.
