What is your price point of Diminishing Returns on rods and reels?

Back when I first started making decent money, a good friend felt the Shimano Stradic paired with a SC Avid (spinning equipment) was the best bang for the buck (1998). I still somewhat feel that way.

Anything over $200 and the person in charge will diminish me to sleeping on the couch, and I won't return for an extended period of time.

  • So I thought for the longest time for me it was something like $250 on rods and then perhaps $350 on reels. But a couple of weeks ago, something happened. Threw my monetary calibration meter all out

Nice is nice. And Nicer is nicer. However, from a productivity standpoint the deminishing return kicks in >$250. But that doesn't stop me from usually running right through that wall at full speed.

Anything above the Tatula. now that the Tat has Hyperdrive. Same with Daiwa rods. Don't know about Shimano- I have Curado MGl's.but no Metaniums

If the (perceived?) rate of performance increase of a rod or reel begins to diminish at $250, does that mean that one is foolish to spend $350?

I think the answer could be both subjective and objective, and varies from individual to individual, sometimes a little and sometimes a lot.

For me with regards to rod and reel purchases, where I am in my life TODAY, the law of diminishing or marginal returns generally sits lower than other factors on my list of priorities. It hasn't gone away, but it's less of a factor.

As a business strategy, I think the law of diminishing or marginal returns generally and rightfully commands more respect than it does when it comes to consumer luxury goods. It hurts a bit to say it, but in the grand scheme, is fishing gear not a consumer luxury good for most of us?

My suggestion is to not try a high-end rod. For years I was satisfied with St Croix Avids and Dobyns Champions and then I treated myself to a Daiwa Steez. I have now sold all my Avids and most of my Dobyns and I have 4 Steez rods, 2 GLXs, and a NRX+.

To answer the OP's question, for rods it's probably in the $200-$250 range. A Steez, NRX+, or highend Megabass rod is likely 25% to 33% better in terms of sensitivity and lightness than those $200 rods but it is 3 times more expensive. From a pure value standpoint, the less expensive rod is the better value but as someone who is passionate about my equipment, I'm willing to pay for high end performance.

amen. For years i stayed right around $300 then i broke down and bought a p5 ...now i own 4 more and several loomis imx . oh well there goes that barrier.

Sounds like I might be in big trouble.

Honestly I shoot for $150 rod then a tee in the same price range. That’s about perfect for me. And falcon rods, lees reels and Shimano all fill the bill nicely

Some techniques don't work you that hard, but things like jerkbaits, A-rigs, big swimbaits, and deep diving crankbaits can. For me, at 67 and loving to throw jerkbaits in recent years, I threw down for the same combo. The Bait Monkey assured me that this was the ergonomically correct thing to do as it would hurt most on the day I bought it.

Agreed ~ at 66 myself, I do most of my jerkbait work with spinning gear.

Have been for years.

I got the P5 mostly to give my right wrist / arm a break a few times a day.

We'll see how it goes.

Sure feels good casting in the snow.

Being a Shimano fanboy I’m in the $300.00 range for both spinning and casting reels. Beyond that my wallet starts to pucker! I really want to try a Metanium but just can’t clear the price hurdle. Is it THAT much better than the Cronarch or MGL’s? Is something more expensive than the Vanford really better ?

I always believed the rod was the key to success, having learned with a cane pole and line the reel was just the means to deliver the bait but the rod let you detect the bite and fight the fish.

As for rods, I’m a pure Gary Loomis fan, have been for forty years. I bought IMX/GLX rods in the late 80’s early 90’s at $400.00 + and still fish them. I’m currently assembling a small collection of Edge rods in the $200.00 to $500.00 range and find them every bit as excellent as the old G.Loomis rods so I am at my cap.

Technology is a wonderful thing.

At my age I am at the point of diminishing returns but just love the feel of quality in my hands.

Everyone’s definition of “quality” has a price and at some point what’s the return?

Oh oh.

200 on reels and 350 on rods.

I have a very impulsive mind. If I get it in my head I want something I will get it. Fortunately the counter to that is I'm a cheapskate so I rarely go over 200 bucks for anything rod or reel.

For me I thought that I wouldn’t pay more then $150.00 for a rod, but I have 2 Lews rods that are $180.00. The Lews Rod that I just traded in was an older rod that was my least favorite rod I replaced it with a Lews LFS rod and that was $140.00.

Now for reels again I’m a Lews guy, my reels range in the $100.00 to $150.00ish.

I started with yard sale/inexpensive/old rods/reels -- my wrists, shoulders, elbows would scream at me after a few days on the water -- once I bumped up to a nicer rod/reel (used rod/reel purchased from @NorthernBasser , Evergreen Combat Stick/Abu Garcia reel) I found out that I didn't have to have all those aches and pains to catch fish if I moved up the rod/reel food chain (a new Combat Stick would be about $229, a new Abu Garcia reel about $180, so about a $400 combo if purchased new) -- I have continued to seek out used rods/reels so I can stay within my means yet also purchase gear that is high quality (subjective/opinion) -- I purchased a used Megabass P5 Windbuster -- and I just purchased a used Shimano Twin Power reel (the reel shown in the Brian Latimer video, I have not gotten to use it yet) that I will pair with the Windbuster once the ice melts off the lakes - once I use them I will report back - yet generally speaking my rod/reel combos have been in the $300/$400 range - time will tell if jumping up to the next tier is worth it or not (new Windbuster is $475/new Twin power is $494 - $949 combo -- I purchased them used for about 55% of what they would have cost new, a bit outside my normal range, time will tell if it was worth it ) -- there are nice rods/reels at most price points - it seems weight (with both rods/reels), components, technology (mostly in reels) are the positive changes as you move up in tiers - you ask a good question, at what point are you paying for impactful/meaningful performance upgrades vs. cosmetics/meaningless bells/whistles/"name brand" (or as you phrased it, diminishing returns) ?

I have 2 imx pros paired with stradic and curado reels and love them.

not sure how much better the next level up (GLXs with sustain/bantam) would be??

I spent my teens and 20s spending around $50-$100 on a rod or reel. Always told myself that expensive gear doesn’t make you a better fisherman. How dumb was I 🤣 In my 20s I got my first Dobyns champion swimbait rod and never looked back. Spent my late 20s and 30s fishing strictly swimbaits on Dobyns champions and Daiwa Lexa 300s. So about $400-$450 per setup. Now, after a couple years back into conventional, I’m realizing I see a huge difference even between a champion and a champion extreme HP. I’ll know as soon as ice melts how much nicer the xstasy is as well. So I’m gonna say around $350 for a rod and $200ish for a reel is a pretty good spot. But I’ll also be trying out a new zillion sv tw this spring, so maybe closer to $350 for a reel as well.

I like to get stuff of marketplace so prices are a bit all over the place buying used. I’d say most id my Rods are around $150-200 new and reels are around $200-300 new. The real answer is whatever vanford costs is what I’m willing to pay. Love that reel.

One day I’d like to get a $200-250 dollar rod. Just to say I tried one. And compare it to the falcon lowriders I fish.

I'll be putting up a couple St Croix Victorys for sale in a week or two....at a discount, and the warranty is transferable.

Let me know I may be interested. I’ve spent a lot of my fun money on the boat though lol

I was getting St Croix MoJo rods new for about $112. Thought they was a decent rod. I also picked up a few Mojo’s up off of market place reasonable.

For spinning I was pairing them with Shimano Nasci reels $99.

The baitcasters I was pairing with whatever reel I could find on sale.

Currently I have 2 NRX spinning rods paired with Vanford reel and PeX8 line.

2 baitcasters rods….one is Victory the other is a Legend extreme. Tatsu fishing line.

Still fish my Mojo’s some.

I don’t really care for the new Mojo’s and I thought St Croix Black Bass felt pretty good.

Reels top out at less than $200 IMO. JDM Zills or any of the new hyperdrive Tats. Buy used and save more. I’ve owned a Steez AII and Met and didn’t see enough reason to keep them.

I personally feel that rods start to level off around the Legend Elite, GLX, Steez AGS (when they were $500) point. Do I think my NRX rods are more sensitive, sure. Hundreds of dollars more? No. I still think the Legend Elite/X lines used are the best combination of sensitivity, durability, and fishability you can buy. If I found a bundle like I did a couple years ago where they were ~$275 shipped I’d buy a boat load more.

Concerning reels, I think the point of diminishing returns depends on the brand. The difference between a Zillion SV TW and Steez A2 is miniscule, but the difference between a Metanium and Antares is mind boggling.

IMHO, It depends on what you are trying to do: Catch fish, or show off to your buddies?

I'm relatively well off, an can afford anything I want, but anything over $250 is show off buying, and won't put a fish in the boat.

Now I do understand the enjoyment of owning and handling a fine piece of equipment and that should factor into decision making, especially if you can afford it.

For me personally, I would rather have 3 - $130 tools than 1 - $500, when the $130 tool does the job.

A point of personal interest . I bought a couple of Kast King reels of AZ just for fun. Their normal $100 reels that AZ had on sale for about $50, and I had a bunch of points so I paid $25. Amazingly good reels. On has worked its way into my normal rotation on my number 1 jerk bait rod. This is my second season using it and I jerk bait fish a lot. No complaints of any kind. I have a handful of Super Duty 300's as my most expensive reels, but I consider them kind of specialty reels and worth more than I normally would spend.

It's only money. If you got it, spend on something you enjoy.

Spot on about the KastKing reels. I just bought an MG12, Kestrel Elite Magnesium, and a Megajaws Elite and they are great. I have no issue saying that the MG12 is as good if not better than my Zillion in any way you want to compare the two. People sleeping on the new higher end KK stuff are missing out.
